Horses for courses and all that stuff, I just upgraded my tried and tested iphone 3 for a iphone4 and love it.
I did 'try' and get a iphone 5 but coulden't get hold of one without waiting around four weeks. Then thought **** it I'll wait till they roll out 4G first before buying one.

There isn't much of a price difference between a 4S and a 5 and the resale value of the 5 will be much higher. I would get a 5.
As my wife's contract is up on the iPhone 4, we will get an iPhone 5 in the next couple of weeks.

If its no extra cost i think just get the 5...
But im gonna rock the boat here, granted im not a big tech head, but i went from a 4 to a 5 a few days a go... and i see very little difference.. actually dare i say it No difference, actually i thought sites like this appeared a tiny bit bigger on the 4 than the 5 and were easier to read without zooming..
Now again im no tech head and maybe i am not using the phone in a way that shows the advancment

I've got a 4s and a work mate the 5. Bigger screen and a little skinnier is about the lot. Slightly better battery but nothing to write home about.
I plumped for the 4s in March time but on a discounted 18 month contract. Happy to see it out until hopefully a more "revolutionary" phone is out next autumn
Good deals about on the 4s too as it's "old tech" to the "must have the newest version" brigade

I was told 4s to 5 you wont see much difference, but going from a 4 to a 5 i would see a difference... Well i dont see any difference, or anything that i would talk about. Got it for free on upgrade so dont care, gave herself my old 4 and would have no problem in swapping back.

Being entirely honest, I would get the 4s. The 4 is glass front and back which is very scratch resistant and can be polished if there is a problem. Additionally, replacement screens are around the £40 mark for a 4.
The 5, has a painted back that is not resilient, and it has a very thin delicate screen. You are welcome to look at the costs of a 5 screen replacement, but at the moment you will not see change from £200. Yes, £200, and they are REALLY easy to break.

I have a 4s and no intention of upgrading.

5 over the 4
Faster web etc over 3g and wifi. Its actually extremely fast over wifi.
More responsive opening of apps
Bigger screen makes the 4 seem a bit small now
Front facing camera much better
Lighter - the 4 seems heavy by comparison
It might just be me but the colours seem more vibrant
Seems to hold signal better and pickup signal faster than the 4
Interestingly I put it up against my mates new Galaxy S111 and, as an example, the facebook app to half the time to load, update and post on the 5 than it took on the Galaxy on the same wifi network. Not wanting to start a war, but thats a real world experience.

Here's the deal.
Got a 5 on a new contract with 3 for £79 and £2 a month less than I was on o2 for a much better package. Gave my wife the 4 to replace her "free" 3GS and sold the 3GS for £100. So i'm £2 a month better off and £21 up on the deal.
In what way is that working my ***** off for an overpriced piece of ****?

To be honest as long as my phone is not blindingly slow at loading web pages etc,i couldn't really give a toss if a certain make of phone is slightly quicker than the one i own. Some of these you tube apple vs certain make of phone is just totally ****,you're talking like a blink of an eye quicker in certain instances..

A guy I work with who's a big apple fan had an iPhone 4S, sold it and got an iPhone 5 on release day, used the 5 for a few days then sold it and got another 4S.
He said the 5 felt flimsy and would scratch very easily on the back. He made a couple hundred quid on it so he has no complaints but he thinks the 4S is the one to have.
I upgraded from a 8gb iPhone 4 to a 16gb 4S in August and I've no regrets, managed to get a 12 month contract so no long tie in. The only reason I swapped from the 4 was I needed more storage space.
I'm pretty passed caring which phone is fastest, biggest etc. for me I like iOS, it hasn't let me down and I don't have to mess around with it all the time. Ill probably keep this handset as long as it runs at a reasonable speed.

For me, I bought a 4S from Wiley on here 10months ago and it's just fine. I'm not going to change it for a 5, maybe for a 6, 7 or a 'new' iPhone whenever they release one (like the 'new' iPad).
