Or (if you are interested in the mathematical equivalent) do power-of (shift-6 on my keyboard) a half, so 9^0.5

Alcazar, you need to search for your PC's "Character Map" application -- all the possible symbols (and the equivalent keystroke combos) are within it...

√ Found it. I've copied it, but it says "U+221A", so how would I use that to make it do it every time?

Depends on where you are using it. U+XXX is a unicode code point (look up unicode if you can be bothered!) and will not be supported on non-unicode applications.

§±²°³ø

A few useful ALT+0xxx combinations for you to find!

Accesories / System Tools / Character Map.

Just don't buy a laptop without a keypad

I think that standard keyboard design needs a rethink.

I would like to see as standard.....
Cut, copy, paste, degree, square root and euro. (Without needing to press more than one key.)
There are useless keys that should be dumped, like ScrLk & NumLock.

personally, I think the qwerty keyboard is an anachronism, and everyone from now should be taught on an alpha-numeric.

If you buy one in France it's azerty....impossible to use quickly, if you know the qwerty setup.

Sorry I didn't answer the question.

If you convert the Unicode hex to decimal then you can use the numeric keypad to generate the symbol in some applications.

So in Word for example:

from character map square root = U+221A.
221A = 8730
type ALT+8730 to generate the square root symbol.

Another gripe, why do we need to click 'Start' to turn off the PC?
That on screen button only appears when the PC is already on!

Ha. That's something MS were aware of when they came to design Win. 7 (and the much lamented Vista).

Can't believe they didn't realise that particular faux pas even earlier - the naivety/sh1tness!
