How can such people exist?
You can't really even blame it on lack of education, because from reading the article sounds like it was purely an emotional response which they thought reasonable. How does one become like this?

It seems to be cultural rather than religious.
One of the posters below the article makes a good point - how often you hear these stories about acid; why do they have a stash of acid in their villages!?

How many honor killings within the Asian community have been committed by non religious people?
Religion + culture = Honor killings correct me if I'm wrong?
They are driven to do it by the shame & pressure of there religious teachings IMO.

She just happened to have the acid to hand when the girl looked at a passing boy. Do they carry it around just in case or what?
"She said, 'I didn't do it on purpose, I won't do it again'," said the mother. "By then I had thrown the acid. It was her destiny to die this way."

Despicable and incomprehensible to us of course but the phrase throwing stones and glass houses springs to mind.
It seems like not a day goes by that we don't read about a child being murdered (often by family), raped, abducted, beaten to a pulp or molested in this country. The whole Jimmy Saville, Welsh children's home etc being the most recent.
So it may make us all feel better to point the finger at those 'uncivilised cultures' in the Asian sub continent and Africa but perhaps we should get our own house in order first?

I find the notion that this was the girl's "destiny" deeply sinister; a devastating mix of Islamic fatalism (in sha'Allah, etc.) and this particularly retrograde and destructive folie à plusieurs that infects Pakistan.

for someone to inflict such pain, especially to there own offspring, and for it to override paternal instinct it must be an extremley powerful force.
its utterly incomprehensible to me, disgusting and attrociuos behaviour tbh. sickening and saddening to know some people feel pressure from somewhere to go to these lengths.
its a culture i know nothing off and tbh im fcking glad - as it would keep me awake at night with despair!

Ahmed swallowed bleach during a trip to Pakistan in 2003, in what was later reported to be a suicide attempt. Her father claimed that she drank it during a power cut, thinking it was a bottle of fruit juice

I think the difference here is the reaction of the country/media, in that we in the west tend to be horrified when such things happen, whereas in Pakistan it seems less of an issue (perhaps due to the caste of those involved), and while I am not an expert on Pakistani media, I suspect they don't cover it with the same sense of outrage we do, turning a blind eye perhaps.
You often hear of stories of violence against women in such countries, whose plight is only truely heard once the story gets out into the global media outlets and public outcry forces their justice system to do something.

Interesting point. I think every population has, and will have, nutters.

But where does this so called public outrage get us in this country? Has it decreased the number of child abuse victims?
Just a quick search of recent cases and these are just the tip of the iceberg

As I said we would be better putting our own house in order before we spend too much time and energy on other countries. So rather than 'meanwhile in Pakistan' perhaps it should be 'meanwhile on our own doorstep....'

One might almost imagine the mother getting a taste of her own medicine! That would be a pretty vicious act though...might be difficult to find someone willing to do it!
