Default Replacing / servicing fireplaces

When we purchased our house the inspection said we should get the fire place inspected before using it as its not been used in 10yrs..

It's gas and wondering how much a service would cost and how easy it is to rip out and modernise.

Is it a gas fire stuck into the fireplace?

Had it done recently, chimney sweep and fire service, plus part of the chimney in the attic had to have some repair work, because of a hole in brickwork or whatever £130.00.
Think for just a service was something like £80.00...

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3295/2...9efb6406_z.jpg it looks like this. not as dated. It's not so much a fire place more like a gas heater bolted to the wall. Im thinking of having it removed and a more modern one installed. one where the gas actually flames

Tell me the make and model and i can try my best to advise you.
Not sure where you are from, but an average price for a fire service in west mids is around £40.

I suspected it was some kind of similar heater.

I think your idea of replacement is the best answer.
