Padfone 2
Been at least an hour since we've had a phone/tablet thread so here's another.
Asus Padfone 2 got announced officially the other day, looks like a great device.
I love the look of it, although it's still a little big. They have crammed everything into it though.

That's just down to software which can be "fixed", what I'm talking about is the combining of the 2 devices a phone and tablet as one, that is pretty ingenious, even you can't deny that.

It's not just software though is it, it's hardware, hardware that Android is never going to be developed for. Try running an iPhone app on an iPad if you want the same experience, not great.

You won't have to, people are already developing "universal apps" that work for both phone and tablets. Besides you're missing my point, the Padfone 2 is the most innovative device that's come out of the mobile market for some time. There will be a separate keyboard dock for it too, negating the need for separate phone, tablet and laptop, brilliant!!

May be, if the phone's screen resolution is the same as the tablet, have to see what the developers do with universal apps. If I was in the market for a tablet and phone, I would give this serious consideration. The camera is pretty amazing for a phone, 13mp and can do high speed video capture at 60fps.

The tab screen is nearly the same resolution as the phone itself. 1280x800 vs 1280x720
Plus, there isn't really the same separation of 'tablet' and 'phone' editions on android; you just install what you want.

The app does switch between tablet and phone version if the app supports dynamic display. Not many apps do support that feature at the moment. Not a major issue though as Beef says. Before Android 4.0, it was a problem with tablets having to run the phone version of the app, which didn't look right. Google made Android 3 purely for tablets, but it wasn't good enough. In ice cream sandwich they changed all that and made it much more compatible between the two. When you plug the phone into the tablet, it will switch automatically to tablet view if dynamic display is supported. If not you can switch manually if your ROM supports tablet mode, which this phone will have to.
In any case I think the phone is an excellent spec and looks nice, so just that on it's own will do me. My contract is up for renewal in the beginning of next year so it just might be my next phone. Although there will probably be another five flagship Android models out by then so who knows? I know I won't be choosing Apple, as much as I love the hardware of the iPhone, I really don't like iOS.

It is a nice idea: Someone sat down and thought through the fact that the phone market is saturated, the tablet market is dominated so lets do something different.
I don't think in the real world it works very well. You are going to be worried about the docking, not going to be able to cover either with a case and the generic applications are not going to be able to utilise any kind of combined functionality.
Still, as I said, a good idea.

The thing about all this other stuff is it snarls up. I tried a Samsung before getting the iPad 2 and it was as I expected.. Slowed down by open apps, it was laughable.
Do these other tablets get viruses? Not heard they do but it's so nice having had iPads since launch and not getting slow down and snarl ups or having to restart it.
I have an Asus laptop and hardly used it, I turned it on the other day and just reminded me what I've not had to suffer using the iPad for so long.

One day you will grow up, leave junior school and go play with the big kids and you will see there is more to life than the rather pathetic one you have now

This is an update to an existing product so it is exactly taking existing technology and making it look pretty. They won't however make *any* money.
