Driving slow saves fuel.

Driving slow saves fuel.
Back in the day any car I drove I would only get about 20miles more by driving normally as apposed to flat out everywhere.
In my 2012 astra estate 1.7 driving on carrageways at 70+ constantly I was getting about 350miles to a tank.
After the speed trap incident I decided to drive everywhere at the limit or below and rather then over take I would stay behind the car in front.
In doing so I have done ...... wait for it ........
500 miles to a tank! I was expecting 50 or so more but 150miles extra.
Guess I'll just have to take longer to get to places.

However just for the fun of it and out of curiosity i drove sensible off boost all the way down to my lodge on friday, and same on the return journey, i got home and covered 270 miles and still had a quater of a tank was impressed to know she can be good if needed, but the fun of driving was totally wiped out lol! At a guess id say probably would have done between 300-310 miles to the tank so cant complain only done it as i read a thread the other day on "how many miles to a tank" or something like tha, got my answer now lol

Set cruise everywhere I go, at the limit, it's probably not fuel efficient but it saves braking , and I get there 0.3 minutes behind ******** whose decided speed limit isn't high enough and has caught up the car in front.
Why the **** would I be in a hurry to join the back of the queue.

Firstly, I don't care about fuel. Even when I get another scooby I will happily poor unneeded fuel into the flower pot just to get the tesco points.
The whole point of the thread was that I couldn't belive how much of a difference there was as aposed an old car.
150miles is almost half a tank in flooring it! I was expecing it to be about 30miles different.

Our BMW can't use 8th gear at 50mph...need to do 60 mph minimum. Anyslower and it has to use a lower gear and it uses MORE fuel.
Crap in motorway roadsworks with a 50mph limit...as it does 40mpg instead of 45mpg because its stuck in 7th gear
My Golf is only efficient above 1500rpm, but below 2000rpm. That equates to about 53mph in 6th, pity it doesn't have a taller final gear. (I found all of this out when stuck beind a HGV on a single carriageway )

Those instant fuel consumption meters can be very irritating, and revealing also.
I am still amazed that my earlier BMW Mini Cooper used to struggle to get 37 mpg compared with my present BMW Mini Cooper Clubman D with the same size engine now does 53 plus mpg on short runs with town driving and can manage 0 to 60 in 10.2 seconds. Have not had a chance to see what it will do on long runs yet.
