Scary day at work
Had a siht day at work today
One of the lads has took bad
He was acting like he was drunk but soon became apparent it was not drink related
He was just standing with vacant look on his face and struggling to speak And get his words out
He could walk fine and even started working , but after a while we got him in a car and made him go to hospital ( he didn't want to go )
He's in hospital now , he can't tell you anything , even his own address
We couldnt really see anything in his face or arms
All we can think its some sort of stroke
We are waiting for results and news
Any one seen anything similar , it's pretty scary
Tony

Sounds similar to a stroke - sounds like a bleed or something similar in the brain - hopefully some good NHS care and investigtions will see him on a speedy road to recovery.

Just found the episode - http://www.channel4.com/programmes/2...ae/4od#3389983
Think it turned out to be encephalitis. Sounds a little bit similar, but not sure how likely it is that your work mate has it. Could be anything, I suppose!

The odd thing was he was carrying on as if all was normal and we were the odd ones , the final straw was when he came to ask about a job he was doing and just stood there making signs to explain what he meant
On the way to hospital the guy that took him said you know me don't you
He replied yeah , what's my name , don't know he replied
He has known him ten years
It's the Oddest thing I've seen

That's been said also mate , we went through this at work and he was even asked point blank
I doubt it anyway , plus he was took hospital about 12 and he's had a scan and been transferred to another hospital that have a stroke unit
I'm pretty sure if it was anything like that it would have been spotted long before now
I was under the impression if it was a stroke you can't function that well
His seemed more mental than physical
Like I said he didn't want to go hospital and wouldn't even speak to nhs nurse over the phone
Surely he must have known somthings not right

You can recover well from them but it's a big change of lifestyle if it happens

Just have to wait for some news
We do welding and fabrication ( light and heavy stuff )
If it is some sort of stroke would it be possible to make a full recovery to carry on working in his trade
I know it's not a simple question but generally speaking

A shame it's horrible when things like this happen so close to home and it brings the reality of life itself right back to the forefront.
I remember a year or so ago a young lady where I worked at the time was taken ill all of a sudden, took to hospital and the next day we were all told she never made the night!it's shocking how it can happen without warning.

It's never that cut and dry though.
Really hope he gets better soon

Happened to a mate of mine ,it worked out to be a form of fit,he then over a period of 12months had two more episodes ,and is now on medication,it has not happened since ,epilepsy was mentioned at time but never fully diagnosed ,I went to hospital with him ,it was strange as he gradually came out of the trance like state , he started off as 1 year old and gradually aged back to present day over a period of about 4 hours ,hope this helps a bit and your mate recovers Colin

I never thought a stroke could manifest like that , I always imagined it to look more severe
He still can't speak , but can write things to an extent ( he wrote I love you to his mrs ) it's heart breaking
What makes it worse he lost his brother a while back and is a nice guy that never seems to have any luck
I Hope he can recover well from it
It really puts life into perspective when you see things like this

something kinda similar happened to hubby last year, he was sat at home watching telly and then suddenly said he didnt feel right , he looked ok he went to bed and then day after went to dr who rushed him to hospital by this stage he had lost his memory and it was frightening they put him on stroke ward he is only 35, he couldnt walk and speech slurred, he had to have scans and tests turned out to be brain stem migraine - it mimics a stroke but nowhere near as dangerous but just as scary

The same to everyone that's faced situations like this
It's bad enough a work mate but happening to a family member must be awfull
Well I've been to hospital today and he's not brilliant but better than I thought
He's weak down his right side , he can walk , use his hands ( to an extent )
His speech is limited to , yes/no and fck it , why the last one I've no idea lol
He's taking everything in but getting very frustrated that he can't get his words out
I'm gonna pop round too see him again tomorrow ,
Im a little frustrated I can't help him more
So if anyones got any help or advice on dealing with this sort of thing or advice that might help his progress it would be greatly appreciated
Cheers tony

My brother, Pete, had encephelitis a number of years ago. He used to work in a nightclub - got back to my Mum's at about 4am and then at about 5, my Mum was woken by him flailing around on the floor. He was taken by ambulance and at hospital was given a lumber injection for menengitis as a precautionary measure as this can cause similar symptoms.
The next day he knew almost nothing - could barely speak, and what was said made no sense whatsoever! However, the following day, he could start to say recognizable works and a few days later put a couple of them together to form a sentence. However, he couldn't remember a lot of things, such as names. Oddly, he could recognise a face as familiar, but not know the name or why he knew that person.
Over the course of a week or so, he was almost back to normal, but always struggled with certain words.
The brain is a wierd thing and different people react in different ways - my brother made an almost complete recovery, but was then diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following initial treatment, the tumor returned and as it grew and put pressure on his brain, he again started to have trouble forming sentences and recalling certain words, which eventually became very frustrating for him - it was like the connection between his mind and the outside world was breaking down. He maintained his sense of humour to the end, but it was very hard watching him decline to his inevitable end.

What I meant to add was, although the person you know can't communicate at the moment, I'm sure that within, he is probably fully conscious and frustrated with his current restricted movement and speech.
Please be there for him - my brother's friends were there for him to the end - it made such a difference for him. It can be frustrating and emotional, but it sounds like it is still early days and there is still a change for plenty of improvement over the coming days and weeks.
I wish you all well.
