Steam Trains
It is my brother in law's 40th birthday soon, for his birthday his wife is buying him an 'experience day' where you prep and drive a steam train - as far as I know this is a 'full size' train as opposed to model railway type thing.
He has an interest in trains and railways both in the real world and model making. My wife and I were wondering if there is a workshop that builds trains that would offer tours of their plant to members of the public.
He lives near Nottingham is there anything anyone is aware of that may fit the description within a hours travel (by road not train!!!) - we are struggling for ideas, although we have plenty of time to come up with something.

Have you tried the Great Central Railway? It's in Loughborough, which is not far from Nottingham.

They do experience days and also have worksheds where they do restoration and maintinance but I'm sure if they allow people in for tours. You would need to check.

York railway museum has tours that also includes their workshop where they maintain them.
It's not exactly close to Nottingham but its not that either really.
