Just got my Motorola Talkabout T6222 two-way radio, and it's a funky bit of kit.

got a question though.

Was chatting to a mate about it and he mentioned channels and sub channels, for example channel 7, subchannel 25.

I've looked in my manual, cos I'm good like that , but it does not mention sub channels, it says the radio has 8 channels and 38 Interference Eliminator codes.

Can this radio not do sub channels?

or would my guess, that the Interference Eliminator code is the sub channel? so in the example above, I'd use channel 7 and Interference Eliminator code 25???

 

Markus, I've got 2 of the older Motorola T28 and they have 8 main channels and 38 'sub' channels. I'm not sure if they are officially called sub channels - it is just what everyone calls them. So your eliminator channels are the same thing. You can get cheaper radios that only have the main 8 channels though and I'm not sure if these are compatable with the 8/38 type radios.

thanks a millon for the clarification. Was going to get the T288 but they are discontinued, hence going for the T6222.

there are indeed 8 channels or frequencies on PMRs.

The sub-channels use some sort of squelch mechanism (a special tone of which there are two different types) that only turns your loudspeaker on when someone is using the same "sub-channel" as yourself. Cheaper radios do not have sub-channels so they will pick up (or rather allow you to listen) any sub-channel on the same frequency. Some more expensive sets also allow you to scan the frequencies regardless of sub-channel.

Thus, a pair of users on, say, channel 5.1 and another pair on channel 5.2 (within the same transmission range) will actually interfere with one another (oh, er, missus) although they should not be able to hear the people on the other sub-channel.
