Road Tax (VED) changes on the way ..
..... the Tory Government has realised that there are diminishing returns on VED - this is due to many new cars being Zero Rated.
Prepare for a massive increase in the VED paid from Gas Guzzlers.

They need to ditch it and stick it on petrol so payment is based on usage and economy rather than an arbritary figure based on CO2 output, would do away with all the admin and sending little disks out, would do away with avoidance to a certain extent, base it on 10k a year in a 30 mpg car paying £200 or so now, catch those BMW Eco dynamics paying no VED, ludicrous that it is based on emmissions so someone spending 30k on a car pays next to nothing and then does 30k a year where someone in a grands worth of 2.0 Mondeo pays £260 but only does 3k.

Same sneaky plan when they started nagging people to buy diesel,so more and more gradually bought diesel and what happened, the price of diesel went above petrol...

I suspect this is a move to force people to buy the expensive electric cars, which probably cost twice the petrol/diesel alternative does, and then they will find a way to sting those buyers.

Mate has bought a Mini with zero VED, still drives around like a lunatic (I have been in the car) on the Cumbrian roads. Great fun
He has had a classic, Blob, Hawk but got pi$$ed of at paying the government..
Pound to a penny in 2 years time his VED will be £200 LOL

It would appear unlikely that they will try to get money from gas guzzlers through VED, as previous policies have effectively removed these from the road, thus causing the loss of revenue.
To a point, the same logic applies to increasing petrol prices as cars use less and may indeed use none.
Therefore increased VED on the plethora of cars that attract low VED or perhaps road charging is the best way forward.
Maybe this is good news for gas guzzlers and not bad.

Agreed. The whole emissions based VED is pointless as it bases it on EURO III/IV compliance cars. When Euro V comes out, it'll have to change again, and again with EuroVI etc.
Problem is MOT tests don't test emissions criteria to that kind of level (especially diesels). So its quite possible many low emissions cars are out there on the road putting out far more pollution than they should be when they start to wear out and clog up or are driven round with a component fault (for example the EGR coking up the inlet ). Which makes CO2 based VED pointless. Whereas a badly maintained car that is not running properly and causing pollution naturally uses more fuel (ignoring Nox emissions for now..MOT doesn't test for that either ).
There are plenty of cases where cars are just driven into the ground and never been serviced or driven in ingnorance of a running problem so don't run properly and pollute, and its usaully cheapskates and women who do this; they run a car till it stops working and then buy another one. For exmaple I've just done a service on a 'daddy girl's' BMW 118d ...with -9000 on the service counter and run flat tyres with no air in. In other words she's been driving around for 9000miles with the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree telling her to service the car ASAP. Air filters dirtier than a used vacuum cleaner bag, oil like sludge, and tyres down to the cords (don't forget the increased emission caused by driving around with deflated tyres).
But hey, at least its only £30 to tax!
The only saving grace is most modern diesels now have a exhaust particulate filter, so if there is a emissions problem of any kind with the engine then that clogs up, put its into limp home mode and makes the car pretty much undrivable.
And of course, scrapping it would save billions in overheads in maintaining DVLA databases, websites, liasing with the post office, cross-checking insurers MID and MOTs, banding and rating each model of car, car tax cameras etc.

Let’s just say for example that the government announces plans to tax the new breed of eco cars that are now hitting the show rooms from 2015 (or whenever the next election is) . Predictions say it will raise X billions of pounds for the exchequer. Does anyone think for one minute that should Labour or any other political party[1] get in to power, that they would drop these plans? They are all cut from the same cloth and are quite happy to clobber the motorist and just move the goal posts to suit.
[1] Is there any other political party?

It's true Les .... todays Diesels are a superior form of transport.
Just as the Impreza rocked the world through the decade from 1995 - 2005 .... the Diesel has rocked the world from around 2005 - now.
My Honda Civic 2.2 TurboDiesel does eveything the old Impreza did back in the day - it makes me smile .... it looks great, it pulls like a steam train, it returns 55mpg AND costs a mere £115 a year to tax ...... oh, yeah, nearly forgot - £165 a year Insurance

Governemnt in stealth tax shocker ... at least it finally lays to rest the notion that they genuinely wnat people to drive low emission vehicles for the good of the planet.
I seem to emember a similar government persuading everyone to switch to diesel and then making diesel more expensive than petroll!
History just keeps on repeating.
