Default Self-Unlocking iPhone 4

Is this common? My girlfriend connected her iPhone 4 to iTunes to add some music recently, only to be greeted with a 'congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked' message! -it may have spazzed out first and she may have restored it immediately before; I didnt pay attention-

She has now bought a giffgaff SIM, which works and displays an O2 provider logo, so the phone has definitely been unlocked...

If only it was always that easy.

It is that easy, just call your provider and ask them to unlock it.

Hey Sorry, that's the message you get when you call them to unlock your phone or register on the unlock website at O2.

Maybe the provider is unlocking all iPhones after a certain amount of time, who was it?

Nice surprise I guess phone unlocking, will be a bonus if and when she comes to sell it.

You usually have to request it. I'm suprised it 'just happened' especially as it is a revenue earner (o2 charge £15, Orange £20).

It was originally locked to Three. Id be very surprised to hear that it had anything to do with the supplying operator, especially this one.

She attempted to sync after adding a new CD to iTunes and the phone had a turn. After restoring it using a relatively recent backup, it was unlocked, apparently through iTunes.

This shouldnt happen of course, so I was curious to know whether other people had heard of anything similar happening.

I'm super surprised as the IMEI number has to be added to a database held by Apple. Maybe your IMEI was added by mistake. Either way Happy Days.

In theory then, through iTunes, it cant be unlocked locally? That makes it all even more unlikley.
