Book suggestions
Off on holiday in a few weeks time and to my shame I haven't read a non work related book in ages.
I'd like something non fictional ie could be historical, political, philosophical, biographical etc but mustn't be too heavy. I need to be able to read it in between running after the two kids.
Any suggestions?

Our staff rooms are full of book vendors making a fast buck, not sure why the NHS allows it but there you go. Free lunchtime reading LOL
I read some bits from Chris Evans Biography, I think the guy is a real **** but his childhood days remind me of mine

OK, you need to go and find two books from the author Conn Iggulden
The trick is to buy them without reading the plots as the stories are fictionalised versions of real events in history.
First one is Emperor - The Gates of Rome, leads on to 3 more books..
Second one is Wolf of The Plains, leads on to 4 more books.
As long as nobody gives the game away it's fantastic to find out who in history the young "characters" turn out to be

there is a 500 page book thread on here somewhere. try some of the suggestions. I personally would do the Space Wolf omnibus. a Warhammer 40000 novel that is just pure get away. not required to think, just revel in the blood, guts, maiming, and killing of chaos marines.

Good writing and story so far, although I will resist the urge to grow a beard and smell funny at SCI-FI conventions though

Funny that, just reading the horus heresy right now, didn't realise it was based on nerdware until half way through when I looked at the back page....

Thanks some interesting suggestions to look into but
1) Must be non fiction, don't want scifi stuff like wolf hammer and I've seen the dragon tattoo films
2) Hate Chris Evans so don't want to read anything by him
3) Why evolution is true sounds good but I don't need convincing if that's the point of the book
The Stalingrad book seems interesting, my knowledge of WW2 is shameful. Maybe I should start with a book that gives an overview of WW2 first?

I got this years ago but its still available - Stuka Pilot by Hans-Ulrich Rudel
WW2 Greatest pilot wait till you read what he got up to
2530 Combat missions say it all - he tried to take out russian tanks while still on the ground
Total nut and one hell of a story
Iain.

In that case, I would recommend "The Storm of War" by Andrew Roberts.
For a tome of its size and subject matter, it is extremely readable and will give you a good overview of WWII.

on that subject, the following
Into That Darkness: From Mercy Killing to Mass Murder - by Gitta Sereny
is a fantastic history, and an analysis of how a man goes from a simple docter to a mass murderer, together with exploring, the often "blurred" dynamics within an extermination camp, and the sheer will of humanity to survive
brilliant book

What about Liar's Poker? Not heavy at all. Entertaining and I lol'd a good few times at it. But it still manages to paint quite a detailed picture of the world of trading in the 80s. Well worth a read.
