I have tried many low energy GU10 replacements and all have disappointed with the colour and strength of the light. They look bright if you look into them, but the light doesn't seem to reach the worktop You only get very small bright areas. The physical size of the bulb can also be an issue in many fittings.

Recently we got some Philips Master Series at work and I was impressed. I have now tried both GU10 and MR16 at home and they are equal to the bulbs they replace. An excellent product but at £20 a piece a rolling replacement programme will be implemented.

They're getting cheaper and better all the time, most of the major lamp manufacturers have started to make them, philips, osram, sylvania etc.
Most electrical wholesalers have them on powered displays so you can compare. I saw some the other day, uk made, £10 each, impressive output, but unfortunately i can't remember what make they were.

I've ordered a 4w 5LED CREE lamp from DX and a 5w 5LED lamp - just to compare & trial.

$10 each so not going to break the bank.

I have replaced bulbs in 4 rooms now with these:

What is deceptive is when you have some bulbs as classic halogen and some as LED - under those conditions the different light (colour, pattern, etc) from the LED bulbs makes them seem to be weaker. However, once I had replaced all of the bulbs in the room this curiosity disappeared, and the level of light given out by them is spectacular.

I have 9 of them fitted in my kitchen, and every time I've had visitors round and turned them on there has been blinking and claims of '**** that's bright' - and that's before I point out they're LEDs. It also means I drive all 9 lights for less than the power of a single halogen, and there is virtually no heat given out by them which avoids ceiling scorching and the associated fire risks.

My advice would be to order enough to do a room, change them all, then live with it for a couple of days.

These are good http://www.kosnic.eu/product_info.asp?pid=594 direct replacement for GU10 and available in 5watt warm white to match halogen light. Just fitted some for a customer expect to pay about £19.00 with projected lifespan lifespan of 30000 hours.

Went to buy some more Philips Master Series GU10s and they have discontinued the old 4 x LED type and replaced them with 6W single surface mounted LED. Unfortunately the surround has changed in style slightly, but the output is really good. You can't tell the difference between the new LED and the old filament type. The light is whiter, but they are available in different temperatures and dispersion angles, and all dimmable now. Still expensive but cheaper than the old LED ones

I replaced mine with Kosnic 5w 3000k (warm white). I'm not sure how they would be in a "has to be flush" type fitting as they stick out a little bit more than the previous halogen type.

I wasn't sure if they would be bright enough or span the area how it was before. I now know the answer and there fine
