I have the old Planar 2 with RB250 arm, heavy acrylic platter and denon mc cart, if it's anything like that you'll love it. Got much vinyl already? Get on discogs, it's a good site.

Ah, the Rega Planar. I thought they had a GLASS platter?

I NEARLY bought one back in 1980 or so, but instead, went for the Linn Axis, with the LINN arm and K18 cartridge, which I still own.

Yeah, it had a glass platter but I upgraded to the heavy platter and tungsten tonearm weight and stub.

Linn for me, with ortophon cartridge and tannoy speakers, doesn't get as much use as I'd like it to have these days, young kids and expensive vinyl doesn't mix, who plays what anyway?

A good record player will beat any currently available MP3 player hands down, at least up to 16 bit/44.1 kHz. It just cannot compare. Ok you have to go through the hoops of cleaning the record, putting it on the turntable, changing it halfway through etc etc but if your music is more important to you than merely the convenience of digital, vinyl is still the way to go, every time.

In fairness I have never had the privilege to hear a "proper piece" of music on a decent turntable. All previous turntable experiences, even with reasonable hi-fi buffs, have just resulted in extra crackles in the music. Maybe one day

I think the audio-luddite regards the Technics as a DJ TT, just for scratching and all round abuse. They are very capable bits of equipment, always welcoming of a bit of modding but very capable.

You do know there is a company in Belfast that can seriously improve these for pure audio performance? Quite expensive though.

The RP1 is a great entry turntable by the way. Couldn't keep them in stock here.

i have to say it has served me very well over the years. i am wondering are turntables like old instruments, in that they seem to sound better as they age. maybe it's just my hearing that getting bad.

anyhoo, digital for on the run. vinyl for that sit down for the night on your own with a few bacardis. nothing like it.

RP2 here with goldring 1085 cartrage, if possible get it on a puka turntable wall shelf mounted on a brick not plasterboard wall, also make sure its set dead level and cartrage alined with a cartrage protractor and tracking weight is bang on, as regas have no suspension. If you get them on a vibration free surface and set up properly you will be blown away.

I`ve paid more than twice that for an LP in the past, Granted i knew it was worth more and was only ever going to increase in value, Still got it in my collection too, A bit of local music history IMO as it was recorded about 500 yds from where i lived, Oh and thats if you like 60`s/70`s Psychedelic/Progressive Rock

Na its not Lyric, can't remember the name of the company will look it up when I'm on the computer.

Didn't know that Lyric did Bose! Suppose it suits their customers. Used to love going in and seeing their upmarket BO TV's that were rebadged Philips models.

A nice idea.......in theory.

If you paid to see a band live, would you expect outisde extraneous noises like somone drilling the wall? Another band next door? Doors slammming? Someone letting off fireworks? The rumble of tube trains all the time?

Nope, nor would I.....so I now listen to CDs

That was me i think, and i still absolutely love it I dont think i'll be changing it anytime soon, although an sme tonearm is a future upgrade..I recently got a koetsu cartridge for it which seems to complement it perfectly.

Going back to the original poster, cracking turntable! First proper turntable i had was a planar 3, and was very happy with that for a long time. Enjoy!
