Was I right to say something?

Was I right to say something?
Had a really unpleasant experience earlier and for me sums up this country today.
I was leaving my gym and was about about to walk across the private car park to my car, a car approaches doesnt yield for me (of which he had no right to do it would have just been polite) pulls into a disabled bay right out of the front door, hops out chatting away on his mobile and goes to walk into the gym. He hesitated by the door as he was still talking and saw me looking on his windscreen for a disabled badge of which there wasnt one.
So I walked over to him and asked if he was going to move it before going into the gym, this turns into a row him calling me all sorts and me having a bit of a go and what right he has to park in the disabled bay. He gets a little aggresive and i ask him if he really wants it to go this way as it would only end one way, he backs down calls me all sorts and moves his car to a normal space.
Just before moving it he calls me a racist, i'm not going to dignify the accusation as its completely irrelavent to the issue. It just saddens me that it is exactly this type of issue that splits our communites. He and I both know it is nothing to do with the colour of his skin but the principle that the space is for disabled users. If he doesnt like it join a gym elsewhere.
I spoke to the managers of the gym (it is a large well known group) and even though they could review the incident on CCTV they wouldnt as he moved the car in the end.
I wouldnt let many people call me what he did, the reason i did? Because in my heart of hearts I knew the racial element would come into it, not the fact some arrogant pleb wanted to fight me because i was brave enough to point out that he shouldnt park there.

My brother has a disabled badge (he is in a wheel chair) It pisses me off when all the bays are taken up by people who don't have a badge. So I'm glad you said something.
I assuming the guy was a different race or should I just say colour thats probably why he pulled the race card. ****ing idiot (not you him), excuse my language.
Just out of interest what race was he.

Yeah because disability isn't limited to physical its mental as well. I know people that couldn't walk but went to the gym I used to go to so that they could work on their upper body.

Fair play to you for making a stand.
Unfortunately,he is obviously a bit of a dick who uses the race issue to try and cover for his failings and also to try and get you to back down.
Nice one for standing your ground as these things are the thin end of the wedge and unfortunately happen too often without being challenged.

I took his registration number and will be emailing the general manager this evening, complaining about the incident and how upset i am at being called a racist.
Will be interesting to see how he deals with it.
I'm glad i said something but do wonder whether the hassle is worth it.

What EXACTLY do you THINK the GM will do?
My guess is that he will do absolutely nothing.
There are some ignorant people about. In the end, think about whether it's WORTH getting wound up over them........you could be shortening YOUR life
I would have put nails under all four of his wheels..........

I would say 2 things.
1. Good on you.
2. Dont do it again!
Why?
All it will now take is for him to report this. The police tend to be quite hot on anything that's "racially aggravated" and will have stricter investigation criteria to follow. Ok, might not make it past the CPS but is it worth having your time wasted?
Not worth it imho.

I annoys me that the gym(or any other company) don't enforce these rules. They supply the service for their disabled customers.More people should complain to the staff & there should be a sign 'Failure to display a blue badge could result in membership cancellation'.
As the op states this sort of behavior drives me mad. I think it's because I cannot follow their thought process.

How random I had a similar thing today but no abuse or racist cards getting pulled tho.
I was in Tesco car park, just as I pulled into the parent and child spaces with the Mrs and little one in the car, I got out my car and a lad parked beside me was jumping into his car with his mate with subway bags with there lunch in them. I looked in the back of his car and he had a child seat but no child, so I knocked his window just as he started his car and said "excuse me mate you seem to have forgotten you child" he went bright red and put his hand up and said sorry, his mate said I told him not to park here and started laughing..

I witnessed an 11 year old girl telling two staff and our on-site cop to "F*** Off !", repeatedly today...
In my day that would have gained you a "slap". Justifiably IMHO.

Someone needs to stand up for standards, well done.
What a **** bag, parks in a disabled bay and then plays the race card, double standards.
I don't like the way if there is an altercation involving a white person and another race it immediately is deemed as a racial incident, a bit like when I left the Police, it was, ok, bye but when my Asian mate did a whole machine kicked into gear to try and keep him, he wasn't sure if it was his skills or his skin that was the motivating factor, we kind of decided it was the skin issue and it pissed him off a bit.
I have said it before and will say it again, if someone is taking the ****, regardless of race they need to be told, I think part of the problem with misbehaving minorities is the fact nobody dare say anything any more so they keep chancing their arm, not to do with race, that's human nature.

Im really not sure its relevant but to answer the questions answered I am white and he was of asian decent.
Out of all my bravado on here I do feel passionate about vulnerable people in our society which obviously includes the disabled and it makes no difference whether someone is old/young/middle age/black/white/asian/blue/brown or green, parking in a disabled space is wrong and we should not be afriad to tell people it is wrong.
