Boxing Great - Leaves the Ring
For the final time ...
Former world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier dies after a brief battle with liver cancer.
I remember in the early 1970's watching the 3 greatest boxers who have ever lived slug it out .... I was just a kiddie of 32 years at the time - but, boy, were they fantastic fights!
RIP

I agree Lewis, that period was a fantastic and exciting era for heavyweight boxing which I remember so well. London, Cooper (my hero!), Johansen, Clay/Ali, Liston, Foreman (The Rumble in the Jungle ). And Smokin Joe was right at the top with only Ali as king.
That left hook was simply awesome. Thanks for the memories Joe

Shame we never saw a Harrison/Frazier fight. Joe would have taken Harrison out of the ring in first round

Why do we no longer have fight nights like those anymore?
Is it because only SKY have the fights AND charge extra for them, therefore the viewers are minimal in numbers?
These 1970's fights were talked about in school playgrounds and in offices and factories across the land .... TV's were put on and the fighting began.
They really were glorious days .... never to return due to money and greed

It's also i feel because of things being a little corrupt. I'm a massive boxing fan and watch almost every fight every week. There have been some massive injustices in scoring and referees even recently that remind you that boxing is not controlled by the boxers.
Anyway, RIP a true boxing legend.

Nothing to do with Sky. It's all controlled out of the US (was mostly by Don King) and there simply isn't the quality of fighters since Tyson. What we have currently is an embarassment to the sport compared to 20+ years ago.
I hope the Frazier vs Ali fights are shown on TV to mark his passing.

You are misunderstanding what i'm saying. Your reply has nothing to do with the point i'm replying to in that the lack of boxing now has nothing to do with Sky as claimed by PSL. The heavyweight titles were all controlled out of the US and that is where the promotion money was coming from (and going to in fees Sky were having to pay).
The heavyweight division always had numerous US fighters at the top in the 80's and 90's with only one or two UK fighters in contention at anyone time. You had Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Ruddock, Witherspoon and Foreman when we had just Bruno and Lewis.
You look at World boxing now and it's only the Welterweight division that has had any big hype fights with Mayweather and Pacquiao, heavyweight boxing is dead in the water. As I say the current crop are an embarrassment compared to 20+ years ago when you had the list i've just mentioned. The Klitschko brothers would have been destroyed by any of the above.

Apologies Joe for chatting at your graveside.
