Default Whats a good time to do the marathon in for a 40yr old guy.

My mum did it under 4 hours at 40, so i have to beat that. Is under 3 hours a realistic target after 12 months training. I am naturally quite fit and healthy.

If my maths arew right your mum did it in 9 min miles approx, and you want to do it in 7 min miles. Its a lot to ask. What are you running now?

You will need to gain two different targets, being able to run a marathon distance, and then being able to run it at a quick pace.

Yes, after a quick search, 3 hours is a bit much to ask. The recommended time for someone with 3 years training is 3 hours 30.

I think your mum did very well indeed, I would be aiming for 9-10 min miles dependent on gradients, and most importantly do her time by a couple of minutes!!

I ran my first marathon at 40, anything under 4hrs is a very good time indeed

a good benchmark is your 10k time, for an under 4hr marathon you really need to be doinng 10k in around 47 mins

If you have been traing for 12 months what do you do a marathon in now? You realistically have to run a marathon a week to do a good time.

I've just started running, but you always need a target.

Most people who do a marathon wish to do it in under 4 hours. That should be your target in my opinion.

Agree with hodgy, 10k regularly in 55ish minutes wont have you far away. Having said that i run 7k in 38 minutes a couple of times a week and there is no way i could run a marathon.

Best of luck and what a great target.

running is different to training, I used to train 5 days a week for 6 years then I started running. I was stupid enough to think being fit would mean I could run so I went out and ran 3 miles in 17 minutes. I couldn't walk properly for a few days as my calfs were killing me Different muscles for different jobs, try running 10 miles each run and see how you get on.

At 37 I did it in 3hrs 23, I am a regular runner and do 1/2 marathons most weekends just to kill time in 1hr 40mins without the extra speed I gain in a race. If you do a sub 4hr great, sub 3hr 30 with dedicated training for a year without regular running beforehand - excellent. Whatever, good luck

My 62 year old cousin is still faster than me - he is the commonwealth marathon record holder though having won the 1974 Commonwealth Games gold on his second attempt at the distance

I did a half marathon in September in 2hr 10 mins and i didn't really train properly. You get carried along by adreneline on the day.

I don't think i could manage a marathon without serious training. It took me 2 weeks to recover from the half. By teatime on race day i could barely walk.

I would concentrate on just completing it and not worry about your time, find your pace and let your time work itself out. It would be a huge acheivement just to complete it
