Angry Passwords

Just need to vent.

Trying to log onto my Oz bank account, must have got the password wrong or something, now got to post away a form to get it reset...post it to Oz...just when I am about to go away and work so can't do what I wanted to do which was submit my Oz tax return. Or it could have been the stupid dongle thing because sometimes the display farks up.

It's just annoying as hell, must have dozens of user names, passwords, memorable numbers etc for various bank accounts, work stuff, directgov, this and that, airmiles, PIN's, plus stupid forums like this.

Banks are the worst. HSBC just have a new stupid calculator/dongle, a new passwords system too.

Sure you are not supposed to write these things down but I no rain man. Actually I did sin and had stuff hidden on my PDA but that broke so I lost it all.

I know banks need security but each institution/website/whatever seems to assume it is the only one you use and have a username, dongle, password, memorable number for....

Must be a better way?

Barclays are a pain in the @rse, when I set my internet banking up , I could use an actual memorable word because the one I chose was not acceptable to their system, I couldn't use a password format I use everywhere else because it didn't like the letter/number combination, and I could use a memerable answer to my security question because the answer was to short

If banks are going to stop people from using passwords they can actually remember, they have to expect that people are going to write their passwords down

2 factor authentication... i'd rather put up with the inherent hassle than have my account emptied.

having to send a form to get the pw reset is bollocks though in my opinion./

This is what annoys me too!

For the student loans company it asks me for a memorable name and not a place or family member. How the hell am I supposed to remember that from 6 or so years ago!?

Maybe your account has already been hacked and they have changed the log in/password details.

Password Corral is a good piece of software as well

As to memorable passwords: don't think password, think PassPHRASE

For example:

start with:

my password is this one

becomes:
MyP455w0rd1sTh150n3

start each word with a Capital letter and swap letters for numbers:

i = 1
e = 3
a = 4
s = 5
o = 0

You can also use SHIFT number added complexity

MyP4ssw0rd15Th150n3 would become MyP$%%w)rd!%Th!%)n£

still easyish to remember, (if you know the trick) but you try hacking it.

What annoys me is that there is no consistancy. I would like to use a mixture of lower case, CAPS, digits and other characters (!"£$%^), but a lot of web sites do not allow certain characters (or more than one word) etc. And then the don't allow the last 4 passwords or passwords with duplicate characters. So I end up having to use different passwords all over the place. I regularly forget them and end up on some site where I onlin login say once a quarter/bi annually just get the password reset each time.

And what's the bettign most people have the same for their PayPal.

Remember - its the insecure way to pay

Weirdly you can reset a NatWest one online. I got asked the old 1st 4th and 6th letter of your password question the other day. Tried three times and it wouldn't accept it so tried to do an online change and "You can't have that, you have used it before" I KNOW THAT'S WHY I WAS TYPING IT IN FFS!!!

end rant.
