Default People who smoke....

Following on from the "see a tattoo and instantly judge someone" thread, I thought it would be interesting to do the same with smoking.

What do we think when we see a smoker. Socially weak and started a life shortening, clothes stinking, expensive, socially intrusive habit just to fit in?
Sophisticated, well educated, worthy of any job you might have to offer?

If they're late 30's plus then I will assume they got caught up in the "glory" of smoking back in the day, now addicted and don't know how to get rid of the habit.

Any "youngster" I see on the steet nowadays with a *** in mouth, I simply see them as complete ********* who haven't got a clue. Very sad.

BTW, I don't have a tat so my post may be invalid

The 10 reasons I started smoking no longer apply I just feel a t**t now for carrying on, I have the will power of a small child and really need to stop.
I only smoke 5-7 a day but that is too many.

I also have 1 tattoo and often ride my bike home drunk with a loaf of bread on my head.

I quit smoking after 14 years last year (now 33). I don't really have an opinion of anyone who chooses to smoke i just think it is pure madness with the cost of the things.
I always enjoyed smoking and the driving force for my quitting was the cost of the things. I always smoked B&H as one of the more costly brands and refused to smoke a cheaper brand as it may have kept me smoking. They were £6.32 when i quit and are now £7.08 which would be £132 a month for me

I have the odd ciggy at home out in the garden from time to time, max 2 per day. Never smoke in public, plus at nearly 29 years old, my parents still don't know I smoke!

Smokers are idiots , why would you knowingly do something that can harm or kill you and enjoy it

My post is just conforming with the SN ivory tower Krew!

(the krew is intentional so calm down and stop frothing at the mouth members of the dictionary corner)

A few years back my friend got pally with a bloke on a car forum (not this one!) and invited him down for a weekend. She'd said he was very intelligent, well educated, witty etc etc so when I met him I was surprised to find out he smoked. I don't know why I was surprised so I guess that means I am judgemental (and if I am I don't care to be honest, it seems to be the word of the moment if you have a different opinion to other people).

We went various places over the weekend and it was very hard to get to know him because every ten minutes he had to nip out for a ciggy so he missed out on parts of our conversations and it quickly became very irritating.
I don't think someone is 'weak' as such for smoking but if they can't go longer than quarter of an hour without one then I would think there is something a bit wrong.

Anyone who still does it must clearly be very, very stupid.

Clearly there are some pretty scarey health risks.

It's very expensive.

You have to go outside to do it. I've even seen people doing this at -20!!

Smokers are mugs ... I know, I smoked 40 a day until 12 years ago when I just stopped completely. A health scare did the job nicely!

I smoked heavily through the 60's, 70's, 80's, and most of the 90's!! The only defence I have is that 'everyone did it' and that the health evidence wasn't as well understood.

Anyone under 30 who smoke, despite knowing everything they do, are utterly stupid - not least because it is a complete waste of money!

It would be interesting to know what percentage of tattoo wearers smoke? As both show a lack of self control and a desire to 'follow like sheep'.?

saying to smokers they must be stupid is errr. stupid.

I wouldnt dare say to anyone, "dont drive that car, its too fast you will kill yourself".

Live and let live.

The analogy does not work.

If people want to do it, fine. But, it is stupid.

Yeah that makes sense.....

You're comparing risk with fact.

I think it's something people do for one reason or another. Mostly down to following the crowd, maybe they just fancied a go or perhaps it was just the done thing.

As daft as it sounds, I know people, mostly women who do it to supress their appetite.

Personally I think that people my age and older who smoke, do it because it was the done thing, and there wasnt as much awareness of the health risk involved, I am sure older people did it for the same reasons. The addiction usually overwrites the health issues.

The youth of today probably smoke beacuse they still think it looks cool.

I have smoked in the past, I have done a lot of things in the past that have been bad for my health, but I enjoyed it.

I don't understand how the least likely looking people who can afford to smoke, do smoke ?

also scraty young mums, smoking, waving their cigs over their babies heads. disgusts me and they'll be the first to complain if their children are ill and the hospitals fail them .

I mean at £7 a packet, its an expensive habit.

but yes, you smokers, fecking stink.

There is a mum at my childrens school who is 32 weeks pregnant and having extra scans due to her baby's health.
She tells me this while smoking.

lol @ some of the responses on here. I have to say though a lot of what I have read is how I feel about the habit though. Smelly, pointless, and damn expensive.

What worries me most is the amount of doctors/nurses standing outside your local A&E entrance puffing away - does make me wonder about the aptitude of our NHS sometimes.
