I started an apprenticeship in the merchant navy, and we had a full time army crew on board (approx 10 of them), along with their SA80 and a hand gun. This was mainly because it was a civilian ship, but contracted out to transport army kit around, from land rovers, to challenger 2 tanks, and helicopters.
I never saw anything bad really, except going through the suez canal, to stop people climbing up the gnag way, we had a few army lads stood at the top with their rifles,

When piracy was an issue in the South China Sea back in the 80s, on one occasion I found some dodgy looking blokes trying to climb up the anchor cable in the middle of the night - a quick blast with the fire hose put paid to their little escapade!
After that we had some armed guards on board for a week or two - to be honest, I was glad when they were gone, as they were very jumpy and seemed to have itchy trigger fingers!

I could not understand why our navy, rather than attack the pirates, were ordered to ensure that they are fit and have enough food and fuel to get back to shore.
They were not allowed to attack the pirates but had to watch them taking hostages under their noses in case the hostages were injured. They were even unable to stop the pirates getting back to their mother ship. The pirates were running rings around them.
