Problem new car no tax / how do I tax it ??!!
Guys bit off advice required ?? looking at a car next week which is for sale some distance away the problem being that the car does not have any road tax, the owner has let his insurance run out now so can no longer road tax it himself.
whats the legal situation regards driving a car just bought back home without road tax ?? is it a case off if stopped being asked to produce the road tax within 7 days or is it an instant fine / points if caught ??
would obviously have the appropriatte insurance to drive the car and would tax it online as soon as I was registered as the new owner .
any advice ??

technically illegal
but personally I would not worry about it
I asked my wife to check the road tax on our familly car when we were en route to see the inlaws in hampshire the other day
she pulled out the tax disc -- and it read "expires 31st August 2010"
how we laughed

okay if I was too phone my insurance company and ask them to send out a cover note for say 24 hours for the date I was going to view the car ( car is 180 miles away ) can I tax the car at a local post office where the car is located with just an ins cover note/ mot certificate and the new owners green slip ??
again the car being locatred some distance awyay dont really want to have to travel down and back up again only to have to travel back down with documents if possible.

I believe so although the Insurance needs to be on the insurance database. I have played this game before and the PO use computers now the same as you would order online. Everything is data checked only difference at the PO you get the disc instead of waiting for it. I'd ring the local dvla mate and ask

Pees me off that, always have this with changing cars, why cant the government just let you ring in or go via the net to pay and check based on the reg number that it has MOT and Insurance and then the vehicle is taxed, no disk, now bloody old fashioned is that in these days of ANPR.

MOT and Insurance disks should be displayed though.

You can tax it using the green section 10 part of the registration form while the rest of the form is with DVLA for registering your name. You obviously need an insurance cover note and the MOT of course.
