If you've got the dosh, the solar panel thing seems like a great idea.
Take what you need and what you don't you flog to the grid and it's all tax free.
I don't know the exact details but it sounds like a winner if you have a south facing roof and you have the money - and willing to invest that money into your house.
I don't think it's as lucrative if you have to borrow the money - at best you'll cancel out the borrowing and get free leccy. Still not bad although I think until everyone catches on it may devalue your house.

Neither solar nor wind is reliable 24/7. Therefore you need to remain connected to the grid and pay all the associated standing charges. The differential cost of using a bit of electricity on top is quite small. That means that I doubt you will get an ROI on an annual basis.
