<JackClark>Get the iPhone, it's a game changer and gives me a hard on</JackClark>
In all seriousness the iPhone is a great phone but it and its tariffs are expensive. The HTC offerings are arguably as good and cheaper to acquire so are well worth a look, but to be honest a lot depends on what you use a phone for. If you are more business focused you may find Blackberry is for you.

I have a work Blackberry and compared to an Iphone it seems archaic and clunky, but the battery last for days and the email/diary integration is great. The wife has a HTC Desire and I would put that as better than an Iphone 3/GS but not quite as nice as the Iphone 4, Iphone 5 is not that far off so will be interesting to see what arrives.
Need to get my eldest a new phone, going to put him on a contract as fannying about with top ups every few weeks is a pain in the ****.

i'm not deluded and have had iphones before, i prefer my desire hd as i find the phone is alot better for the applications i use. but the iphone is a great phone as well and can never be discounted due to the fact its the most simple smart phone to use and is the most trendy.

Itunes and unreasonable tarrifs rule out the iphone for me, cracking phone but at the end of the day that's all it is. Not prepared to shell out £30plus per month for a phone and I'm definitely not going to pay for a phone itself as well as a contractual amount.
Blackberry are boring, mines also terrible with video playback and since it went to OS6, I can't access the Apps store from my phone and its a bit glitchy at times. I still wouldn't swap it for any other phone at the moment as its good on calls, great for emails and the battery lasts for ages!
A friend has the Galaxy s2, its not really a phone. Its a PSP rival.

I guess it depends what you want. To me the people who wrote Android looked at the iPhone and fixed all the things that irritated me.
iTunes (although badly written on the PC) is better than Google Marketplace and is much better at easily syncing and managing data than the other applications I've seen (like Kies for the Samsung Galaxy which is terrible).
My wife's 3GS contract expires in September and unless the iPhone 5 is spectacular she will swap to the Galaxy S2.

There is definitely an "Apple Tax", fostered by it being good, amongst the best but also because its fashionable, A Desire or whatever is pretty much the same thing but it doesnt have the image tht goes with the Apple stuff, and for beany hatted, Mini Driving fashion slaves, its the only choice, it does put some people off though, some of us dont want to identify with all that, like the Daily Mail app is 2nd most popular on the app store at the moment, dead cool that, my mate at work who thinks he is part of the in crowd due to an Iphone and various other label heavy items couldnt get his head round that one, he thought h was living the dream with other cool people, but its really, middle class Daily Fail readers

I'm in the same boat, and have a feelign I'll be leaving the iPhone camp in July/Aug too. Now coming from an Apple fanboy thats strong words.
The 5 is going to be expensive (sim free their already £500 - 600), not to mention the problems in Japan could effect supply.
IMHO no phone is worth that, in this day and age, they are considered disposable electronics. As F1 said, the contracts are expensive too, considering Tesco, sim only you can have the same deal on the same network for £10! (tesco use O2) where as o2 is £16.50.
If your interested.

I'm just waiting for my 2g iPhone to be unlocked then, I'll be loaning it to a neighbour to see how they get on with it, and in return, I'll get to play with his X10.
My short list:
X10
Xperia Arc
iPhone 5 (price dependant)
??
Not a great fan of the 2 HTC's in the office. I find them uncomfortable to hold and they seem to be forever hooked up to the laptops.

iPhones work straight out of the box, do everything you think they should and more and do it simply.
Android phones work straight out of the box, then if you want everything you think they should do they become a time consuming hobby.
Blackberry phones are a great phone plus they do email.

You should think outside that tiny box of yours, it's no wonder you were working in a phone shop.
