Doing the rounds on a few websites..
Without using a calculator what would be the answer to the above equation? 2 or 288?

288 if you are making the assumption that it is actually 2*(9+3)
Have this:
Your power comes from an ability to sense how things might be and to proclaim this possibility with a great force and willingness to act. You have a tendency to be romantic, and can be an idealist. This sense of how the world can be is often expressed with self-deprecatory humor. Because of your need to address the immediacy of the moment, you may not think things through to their logical end, relying instead on a feeling for how a situation SHOULD end. You need to be liked and appreciated by others, although your attention often wanders. Sometimes you neglect old friends in favor of a new or exciting acquaintance. You have a real difficulty being alone. Often you will seem to know how to handle a situation without exactly knowing HOW you know this. Your thoughts are often shallow. While in the excitement of the moment you can obsess about a task at hand. If it should become rote and unexciting, however, it can be dropped just as quickly.

Oops, clicked the wrong vote button. It should be 288.
(48/2) * (2 * (9+3))
24 * (2 * 12)
24 * 24
288
Type this into any programming language (Java, COBOL, c# etc) and you'll get the same result.

You don't work from left to right because there is no multiple sign there.
The point of removing the multiple sign is to eliminate the use of too many brackets.

BODMAS. (Brackets over division, multiplication, addition, subtraction,)
Work out the brackets first, do the division 2nd and then the multiplication 3rd, Simples.

There is a multiply sign there: the 2 in front of the brackets MEANS multiply by. The multiply operation carrys the same strength as the ÷ so you read the equation from left to right to get the answer when you have equal strength operations.
The brackets simply show that you need to complete the section inside the bracket first.

As Leo-RS implies, the question here is whether or not you understand operator precedence when it is not clearly defined. Things in brackets take the highest precedence, then division, then multiplication, then addition, then subtraction.
So in the case in question, where the precedence isn't clear, you should remember BODMAS! Or tell the person who wrote it they are a tool and to use brackets more clearly.

If you wanted that then you shouldn't have grouped the 2 with the (9+3). Grouping it together means nothing in terms of strength just that it's a common entity.
