Pizzas: ridiculous prices?
It being Friday...HOORAH!
Like a lot of people I thought I would have a look at getting some food
delivered.Thought about a Pizza & went to the Papa Johns website.
FOOFING HELL!!! £17.99.
Thats 18 quid for a poxy pizza that probably costs less than £2 to make.
Am I wrong & just a getting to be a tight bastid in these tough times
or are they taking the pish?

Most pizza delivery places have a gas oven. A PROPER pizza oven is one of those stone thingy's with a fire inside

Thing is, you can add a bit of whatever you like to the "nasty" ones i.e. herbs or more veg or whatever

UK Pizza prices are a rip off. We used to pay 18 quid for one delivered from Domino's a few years back.
Over here in Aus on super cheap Tuesdays you can get a pick up pizza for 4 quid from Dominos and even better you can get 3 pizzas from Pizza Hut for around 8 quid!
Even the 'gourmet' style traditional wood burning oven fired pizzas cost around the 11 quid mark.

I spent a year in Southern Italy a few years back. The pizzas there were about 30% of the price they are here, and 1000% nicer.
I've never had one to get anywhere near the proper ones over here, so don't bother with them here.

The pizza markups are big because most smaller independant places cannot compete in the market unless they sell rubbish pizza. Bear in mind that any high street food chain that charges you £120 for a meal will only have spent £20 on the food. An independant restaurant might spend £33 on the food. The cost of opening a premises and paying rates and staff wages means many places cannot turn a profit on a 60% or 70 % GP. The catering trade is labour intensive and attracts high rates. A pizza place still has to pay for delivery and a massive franchise rate to dominos.

I'm prepared to be corrected on this, but I'm sure I read somewhere the reason pizza never comes out quite as good when you cook it at home is because most people have fan-assisted ovens these days, so the air circulation isn't the same.
Any chefs around who can comment on the truth of that?

I saw an offer for pizzas in Farmfoods yesterday so went in. They had Ristoranti extra large 2 for £3 and a half price sticker on as well. Took to the checkout and it came to £1.95 for them both, when I pointed out that it should be £1.50 they couldnt work out how to reverse the transaction so just gave me another one. 3 Ristoranti extra large for £1.95, cant complain about that.

I guess it comes down to overheads. The average Dominos must cost £20k+ to shop fit etc, perhaps more? Then they always seem to have 10 staff working at any one time. Shops are always in fairly good locations, so prime rental / cost. Lots of website costs, printing costs, staff uniforms, training, management etc etc. It all adds up.
My local pizza place is run by 2 guys and 1 driver. They have owned the building for 20 years, must have cost them £30k max to buy in the early 90s. I doubt very much they are 100% legit when it comes to the books, and they can easily sell a 12" pizza for £4.99 and still make £3-4 on each one.
IMHO.
