Question

After some cable advice please. Apologies if I sound a complete Newbie Numptie but I guess we all have to start somewhere.

Just got a Sony DAV S500 DVD player and have hooked it up to the TV using the supplied cable - simple jack plug on DVD to SCART on TV (DVD has no SCART socket). Trouble is I think the picture should be clearer. TV's a 100HZ Panasonic TX-32PL10.

Rang a mate who's into this but he was just boarding a flight and could only suggest one thing quickly - get a well shielded S-Video to SCART lead to replace the jack plug jobbie.

As a complete newbie to the world of home entertainment, can anyone suggest:

1) How I tell a good cable from a bad one?

2) What shielding am I looking for?

3) Any recommended suppliers? (I'm in Reading if that helps)

4) Estimated cost?

Oh, one other thing - any recommendations for a decent FM wire antenna to fit to it so I can get the inbuilt radio tuner to work properly?

Cheers for any help/guidance.

Try www.hifistore.co.uk

The ideal is 3 phono type leads to Scart(If your Sony has them)

An S-Video to Scart (or Squart) cable will give a much better image than a composite cable, which I assume you are using.

These can be purchased from any good hi-fi retailer. In my opinion you get what you pay for, so expect to pay about £50 for a good cable

I bought a £50 Squart cable from Audio T in Swindon and the picture quality is excellent on the Toshiba 100Hz TV. Expect to pay around £50 for a good quality, well shielded cable and get it from a hifi/audio visual specialist.

P.S. If you have a digital sound output from your DVD and a corresponding input on the telly, then use that as well - it makes quite a difference.

Spider,

I just read your post again and saw that the DVD player you've just bought doesn't have a scart socket. That's very odd for a new player - is it a portable or something?

Mildo.

Something like this:

IXOS 135AV S-Video to SCART cable
or
QED "Squart" AV12 S-Video to SCART cable

I have got both an IXOS 135AV cable and QED SCART to SCART cables in my system and they are both very good.

Thanks

Gavin

DJ Dunk - That's the one!

Guys, thanks for all the info - at least I know that my mate's snap diagnosis on the phone was accurate!

Right, off to spend some more cash then.

Thanks again,
Steve
