Angry Halfords - £5 for a bit of solder.

I needed to solder some calibration pads on the speedo on my Skyline today. I couldn't find any in my box of stuff, so I went to B&Q, couldn't find any there FFS, I was like WTF!?

So I went to Halfords and picked some up from where they have fuses and electrical misc stuff at the back, went to pay and couldn't believe they wanted £5.15 I think it was. Must have cost about 10p to make.

But you do pay premium prices for premium services and these guys really know their stuff especially where cars are concerned.

**** the big DIY chains, haven't you got a proper hardware shop near you?

My local one* stocks way more properly useful stuff than either B & Q or Halfrauds, and it's all at sensible prices too

*Delaney's, Mill Lane, Macclesfield

Not that I know of. I should investigate more, but I was busy and also searching around would just burn more fuel up.

Electrical lead-solder prices have gone through the roof. Think it maybe due to the lead being a controlled substance or something.....or inflation....

My last roll lasted ten years and was about £5 for about 50 metres of the suff, I nearly collapsed in shock at the price when I went to Maplin to buy another roll!

What is shocking, you could have bought some of the finest cardas solder for less than that, it's a joy to work with just needs an iron that works around 700c

Since we're on the subject, has anyone ever tried the stuff they sell in the plumbing section of B&Q or wherever, for electrical work? Weight for weight I'd bet it's probably very good value, but might be a bit too thick to use with a 20w iron.

Too thick and no rosin...I use really thin stuff with rosin core, but most stuff I do is PCB based.

The plumbing stuff can be used for automotive type wiring, like soldering bullet connectors and suchlike, provided you use a decent flux, and neutralise it properly afterwards. I'm still using an old tin of Fry's Fluxite that I inherited rom my Granddad years ago

I got caught out the other day, needed nyloc nuts and ended up in Halfords as it was past the private shops closing time 3.00 for a pack of 6 it 7.00 for a box of 50 assorted sizes m6-m10. both a rip off when you consider the unit cost is probably only 2p

I usual use the local motor factors but their opening times can be a little restrictive Halfrauds is a last resort

Nail - head. They have to cover the staff for all those hours that they're open and have no customers.

You did not tell us how much solder you got for that cost. It is not cheap stuff any more of course.

Halfords are usually pretty reasonable with their prices.
