Same as in France please: 130kph, (80mph) on motorways, except where built up/congested, 110kph, (68mph) on dual carriageways, except where built up/congested, and PLEASE NOT 90kph, (56mph), on main roads.............

What we DON'T want is French speeding fines, and we definitley DO NOT want the dirty tricks their cops play to catch speeders

It has been quite widely reported, not just a yahoo sensation. Raising the speed limit to 80mph is a good idea, as is anything that gives you more choice without detriment. You dont have to drive that fast if you are concerned about your MPG, stick to 70mph and let those that wish to drive faster do so.

Could you imagine the carnage though when you get miss little old dear in her 10 year old Micra doing 45 on the outside lane? You think she would speed up any more if everyone else is now doing 80 legally?

Seeing a lorry overtake a car on the motorway is the weirdest thing

Current national speed limit on dual carriageways is 70mph. 80mph on motorways seems decidedly sensible but doubt it will happen.

From my experience most travel at 80-85 on motorways anyway. If they want to help the traffic along on the motorways they should start fining people that drive along the middle lane when the inside lane is free, and also any car seen being overtaken by a HGV

Unless of course you're in a van built to carry 2 tonnes or over, ala Transit, Transporter, Vito etc, then it is 60MPH. With single lane carriageways at 50MPH also. Only motorways are 70MPH in such vehicles.

You know it is a trick most sensible people drive at 85mph on clear motorways so in effect this will be a cut in the real world and then they will install average speed camera's across the motorway network justified as enforcing a new "realistic" limit of 80mph with no lee way.

If they want to speed up journey times then auto bahn the motorways when traffic light enough and build more roads rather than subsidising rail travel, the motorist makes a net contribution to the tax revenue and the railways will always need subsidy so will be a constant drain on money and yet cant replace the car

at the moment Brake want your car to be immobilised if you don't get a service done on the exact schedule.

too bad if you need to get to hospital in a rush.

Agreed & is the speed I drive (speedo speed of course). Raising to 80 is a great idea as I can then drive at the limit

I like fact they drop the speed limits for wet roads on motorways. And also have no overtaking allowed for HGVs on some roads too (N10 for example).

Oh how the A42/M42 desperately needs a no HGVs overtaking rule north of Tamworth.

I prefer frickin' lasers. I've been stuck behind lorries on that pull up to the A444 WAY too many times.

I saw it reported that they may well institute a lower national speed limit if there are oil shortages due to the Middle East unrest at the moment. They did that some years ago for the same reason and the speed limit was 50 mph.

Increasing the national speed limit to 80 mph may well be heavily opposed because of the significant increase in fuel consumption and the Greens won't like it.

Aye, on my trips to Lincoln or Nottingham, I find its quicker to take the M6-->M69. Even though its the longer route its quicker because its three lanes and doesn't get baulked up by HGVs/slow drivers in the overtaking lane.
