The Egyptian army is more than a military institution, it has vast business and property concerns which are totally opaque, many thing they will never allow civilians power because of what they would have to lose. The Generals are all rich and basically CEO's of the business interests.
So from that POV the army is part of the problem and tragically the Protesters think they are free even as their ultimate overlords remain in power.
It's a good lesson as to why the American FF's saw the dangers in standing armies; an army is a powerful force and if unchecked can go from serving the citizens to being served by them!

I think he must have sensed the possibility of a Ceausescu moment approaching.
I sincerely hope the Army will be honest enough to set up free and fair elections for the next government.

An act of self preservation by the army general’s imo
The generals must have realised that there was no appetite to shoot civilians amongst the lower ranks of the army
And once an order to fire is given and not acted on then it really would have been game over for the generals

Of course it's much better to try and be a smart-**** on an internet forum... especially when you're out to get a certain poster.

He's probably talking about the kind of freedom a lot of the western world has, being able to do as we please providing we don't harm others, that sort of thing. As opposed to being beaten or worse for criticising a regime. The sort of rights that render us all equal before the law (the use of force). It's a pretty sensible theory to be honest, given what we currently know; it's difficult to justify one person - or a group - having more of a say/using unnecessary force against another.
And that's my point, you're measuring freedom against the perception that we're actually 'better off' than what is generally seen as an oppressive dictatorship. Using that analogy everything would appear (on the surface) to be better. We also can't do as we please as long as we don't harm others, that's a massive generalisation.

One is naturally free to speak ones mind rf associate with who want wants until someone takes away that right.
Natural rights are never given, but they can be taken away.
