Red Dwarf
Much-loved cosmic sitcom Red Dwarf will be making a return to British television next year after Channel Dave announced they would be launching a new series.
Filming on the ninth series of the comedy which starred Corrie actor Craig Charles as iconic cosmic slob Dave Lister will begin in the autumn. Chris Barrie was also extremely popular with fans for his portrayal of Arnold Judas Rimmer, for OTB’s money, one of the most underrated sitcom characters.
Danny John-Jules played The Cat and Robert Llewellyn completed the cast as the android Kryten. According to the Press Association bosses at DAVE were impressed in 2009 when a three-part special Red Dwarf: Back to Earth drew over three million viewers.
“It got more viewers than BBC2 and Channel 4 combined on the night, which is really good,” said Craig Charles. “So they’ve just commissioned another series of Red Dwarf.” The BBC2 show ran for eight series over 11 years until it was axed in 1999.
“We’re all quite like our characters – we’re caricatures of ourselves,” added Charles. We’ve got to recapture the highlights, like series five or six. If we can hit that mark, then brilliant. There’s no point doing it if it’s so-so.”
When asked whether the Cat, played by Danny John-Jules, and Rimmer, played by Chris Barrie, would be making a return to our screens, Charles said: “Yep, the Cat’s coming back!
“Chris Barrie was my favourite. He IS Rimmer. We’re all quite like our characters – we’re just caricatures of ourselves!” He told The Daily Mail.
But fans will be left guessing as to the plot of the new series as Craig has yet to reveal what will happen. At the end of series eight, the spaceship was overtaken by a mystery virus and the crew all manage to abandoned ship, except for Rimmer who was left stranded alone to face Death – who he had earlier kicked in the groin.

:/ Wasn't keen on the last ones they did, hopefully they will do better with a full series

It got a bit **** towards the end.
Think that type of comedy is dead now. Think any new series will be a poor imitation of the first few series.

What, no mention of Kerchanski?
Not wishing to pick holes, but shes there in S08 and in the 3 parter all you see is a shrine to her.
C'mon, sort out the bleeding continuity.
Yes Ad's your right, it needs the canned laughter back.

Still enjoyed the special though.
Can't wait to see the new series.
I recently started watching it all from the beginning again and it's still great!
Maybe not to everyone's taste but it appeals to my sense of humour.

If they capture what was good about the early series then it will be watchable, I couldnt bear the later ones with Chloe Annet (Kochanski) in, Claire Grogan was miles better and the changes to the filming and adding CGI ruined it.
I dont think that kind of comedy is dead, its a sitcom, they are still around today.
I think they are right to make a new series, i will watch it and if it gives me half as much enjoyment as seeing those first episodes as a 19 year old then its job done for me.

Here is another vote for someone hoping that they manage to recapture the magic of the earlier series of Red Dwarf. I fear it will not be that good though The mini-series they did had none of the old chemistry of the original series

I really really hope it is good, as I have always felt that show was cut short It had a lot more to give....
...still I fear too much time has passed for it to go back to how it was. I'm sure the "feel" will just be different, and that in itself may make the show lose its magic.
