Default How dentists rip us off

Played golf yesterday and had a chat with a guy that supplies crowns to dentists.
He is a focal point for the supply of crowns , which he gets manufactured in - yes you've guessed it China.
These are supplied to him for US15 each.
He in turn sells them on to dentists for US99 each .
Dentists in turn bill us for A$1500 - 2000 here in Oz.
I would imagine a similar price in the uK .

Err how is that different to anybody else who runs a business that involves a qualified skill?

How about his overheads? The premises, staff, indemnity, equipment for sterilising things etc?

At the end of the day you do have a choice, buy the crown off your mate and then have a go at fitting it yourself

I spent 3K inside my mouth last year. At one point my dentists phone went and it was from the guy designing his new indoor swimming pool. I could hear everything as he was stood 1 Mt away from me.

They earn money alright and I agree they are a f rip off.

I do somtimes think they charge alot but you can go to any dentist in Europe sometimes for 1/3 the cost so why not do that ? Plenty of good dentists in eastern Europe.

I was chatting to an old pal in Washington DC recently and she told me she had coughed up $10k for a couple of crowns and bits and pieces. I told her she could have come to UK, had it done privately and gone home with some change!

My sister in law had full veneers to top & bottom last August in London.

£5000 top set and £5000 lower set. Gave her a reduction as she had all done and she paid £ 9600.

Filed all front teeth into a V shape and had the veneers fitted. If they ever fell off she would scare someone to death !!

I made a spinnaker in exchange for 2 crowns about mybe 15 years ago priced 660 then ,

This is the crown im having replaced , it was never a great fit , but then neither was his spinnaker

Joined a sailing club a few years later and a fellow windsurfer turned out to have supplied this dentist with crowns , i say had , cos he apparently decided to go somewhere cheaper - there was real anger there

Drove some flash cars / disqualified several times , yachts , bought a mountain in spain and still has a biggish place here

All dentists in the Uk have to provide on request by law a "statement of manufacture" for crown and bridgework. This is generally not available for overseas labs........

http://www.gdc-uk.org/NR/rdonlyres/8...es_Layout3.pdf

I usually use Malcolm Gill for my Labwork.......... £697 for an implant abutment / crown, add on the costs of me, the surgery, consumables, staff, reception, sterilization, heat, light etc and the cost (in this case to the NHS) do mount up !

http://www.mgill.co.uk/Price_list/index.html

I used to be private and we had a new dentist appear our end of town so my Mrs booked us in there.

My above post explains what I was being charged where a check up was £ 42.00

I had a check up the other week at our new dentist (£16.00) and I had to rebook for a filling. Went back two weeks later for the filling. Afterwards I went to reception and got out my wallet. Receptionist said nothing to pay sir, goodbye. ???

What? Did he charge a reasonable amount?

One of the biggest rip-offs currently in our Society ... Estate Agents and Vets are equally guilty!

I thought crowns were made to fit the person/tooth, i.e a pattern taken and made from that, not just a 'generic' $15 one size fits all?

That's what I had, anyway.

Wifes niece is a Denist in Cebu asia and did a false tooth for the misses for £65
Our local NHS dentist was curious and asked how much ?

He would have charged over £1600 for it in the uk on the private scheme

When I'm old I know where I'm going when my teeth all drop out

Knew a person who went to prague and got lots done for 2k instead of 10k in uk
