As above.

Following on from another thread, we still use a Sharp (6-head, NiCAM Hi-Fi ) VHS video recorder to record telly and watch retro videos. I also have a Tascam 4-track portastudio from the 80s that I'm thinking of renovating. Anybody else still making flint axes in their shed?

Well, I'm using a Marshall guitar amp that still employs some of the earliest technology - thermionic amplification tubes; the weird thing is, nothing else comes close when it comes to amplifying electric guitars. Something about the way a thermionic valve begins to distort when it's overdriven by an electric guitar is perceived as extremely musical by the human ear. I sometimes wonder how much superb quality gear gets dumped for inferior sh1te these days, simply because technicians want £50 per hour plus parts to fix anything when it breaks and that's only when the companies can be arsed to manufacture the parts.

Do you really use a Yankee? I've got one of those inherited from my Dad (I'm 48, lol), in excellent condition, but never got the knack of using one. I know that in the hands of a skilled man they're easily as fast as the best electric driver at putting screws in.

I have one and use it all the time. Once you get the knack of using it it is a fantastic tool. Trouble is I don't think of it as outmoded LOL

Certainly do, a Stanley.

Had it since my apprentice days in 1986.
Beats carrying around an electric one anyday, seeing as I don't use it that much

Of course - still fit into them and still occasionally wear them. Did you know that my only ban on here was from when I once responded to sarasquares slagging me off about wearing them, back when deBanke was determined to kill off the Muppet Show? True.

I've got a pic of your rear in those troosers. The Po' Boys Gig.
Didn't know that about Sara

Sorry, back on topic. We still use the good old fashioned separates hi fi system. Got loads of old vinyl too. It's brilliant

Now that's interesting. I always fancied a straight-blade razor, and can get hold of an old one from work. What are your tips for sharpening and honing?

My son throws his matchbox cars down the stairs, some of which are the very same ones I used to throw the stairs 35 years ago!

Start off with a good flat 1k stone, once it takes hairs off progress upwards, i go to 16k stone wise but most get on with 10k.

Also take your time, the 1k stone is the bevel setter, so the most important, that'll determine how good your edge will be, blade has to look similar on each side.

Failing that just sling it my way i'll sharpen the bugger up.

Well, I'm no stranger to sharpening a wood chisel or plane blade 'til it takes the hairs off. Do you use a strop at all? What about a honing compound to rub on the leather?
