I have heard that there is a mixture of Gatso's dotted around as follows:
1: Grey boxes (empty)i.e. dummies
2: Grey boxes with a flash facility
3: Grey boxes which house a camera.
The ones that have a flash are rota'd with a live camera on a regular basis.
The trouble is when you are approaching one from behind you have no way of knowing. The camera activation works by taking two pictures in a 1 second interval. Therefore, in theory if you were only flashed once it <probably> didn't have a live camera in.

Yes they can be set off by oncoming, not too sure if you get a ticket though.
My radar detector says only 2 of the 5 I pass on way to work have radar. TV prog last Thursday had cops taking out full camera and replacing with dummy radar that triggers flash. I believe the old dummy ones flash once, but drivers got wise, so new dummies flash twice. Sounds like you should be okay.

If flashed once you're ok (the GATSO camera's need to flash twice in order to work out distance travelled between two points). And no you don't get a ticket for being flashed head on from a box on the other side of the road.

I saw the same programme as John STI.
The dummy units now flash twice as well (apparently.)
WW - sorry, but it's a case of keeping your fingers crossed and waiting to see if anything comes in the post...

By the way - year ago, I was told that you could tell if a Gatso was "live" by looking at the two port holes at the back of it. If they were open, the camera was live, if not it wasn't.
This is an urban myth and only means that the last operator to open the thing up has forgotton to close the port holes.
