Default "The Big Freeze" - Arghhhhh!!!!

Why oh why are the media insiting on calling this weather "The Big Freeze".

It is just some slightly colder than usual weather with a few inches of snow.

The disruption is caused, in the main, because we are ill equipped to deal with it.

Our Northern European cousins must laugh their heads off at us while they enjoy their annual "Mahoosive Freeze"

Because the media have to sensationalise everything. One reason I rarely watch the news now. I'd honestly watch a news program that used the slogan "we tell it like it is".

It's winter, there's a bit of snow around. Get over it.

+1 - I very rarely watch the news, just for this reason.

The big question for me is why are they broadcasting seaside safety ads (no $h!t, I saw at least two in the past week), in what's set to be the coldest December for possibly the last 100 years??

To be fair BBC and Sky were reporting non-stop about the snow days before London got a flake.

The safety ads are not for you and I, I need no telling to stay inside with a cold beer, but some need telling like the ones that charbroil their babies on the beach while getting bladdered on Bacardi Breezers.

Lowest Common Denominator is the key phrase !

Errrrrrrrrrrrr, actually, no, it's not Winter, it's still Autumn.

Winter officially begins on the 21st December which is two days away. It's called the winter solstice.

And for us, (here in Scunny), this year, the nights start drawing out on the 20th.

I'm the first to have a go at the media although I still buy a daily paper

But I don't think "The Big Freeze" is overdoing it. Most of the country is covered in snow and it is a bit parky outside with the odd -20. Plus it's not even winter yet!

dl

And a few European countries are also suffering with airport closures etc.

Big freeze my ****. For the west Midlands at least, this is probably about as cold and snowy as the year I passed my driving test (steep leaning curve...hence why I'm so good at driving in snow now )...that was 1996. I remeber it being worse sometime in teh mid 1980s, '84 or '85 I think.

There was also a bad winter in the early 1990's, but seeing I was in Wales at the time, I think was to be expected

This is first time I've actually got the BMW stuck! (It was blocking in my R32, so I used the BMW instead to run an errand), got it unstuck pretty quickly - I just let the air out the back tyres to about 10psi. So I guess thats first for me (whilst everyone stil moans about hpw crap BMWs ae in teh snow )

Anyhoo, I have a cunning plan; I've got a patio heater outside...I wonder if I place it in the middle of teh drive if its powerful enough to defrost the whole drive - I'm fed up with the snow walking into the house

Nah - You won't believe this but I overheard a chap in a pub going on about some stuff they dig out of the ground in Peru and is smuggled into UK. A sort of white powdery stuff. This bloke's mate uses it for cooking so he said but one winter he spilt a bag on his driveway - and you really aren't going to believe this. Wait for it. By morning all the snow and ice had disappeared.

A bit far fetched I know and will never catch on but if you pm me I can let you have some at mate's rates

Because saying it's winter, which it is, just doesn't give the same headline grabbing media frenzy.

Depending on the gas used you'll be lucky to get it to light. Butane only works down to about 0 degC. Propane works below 0 degC.......just.

Found this out a couple of new years eves ago. Ended up soaking the cylinder in a sink of hot water to warm it enough to burn LOL

Well I walked to the shops today, after 7" of snow crippled the roads and the idiots driving.

We ended up throwing snowballs at cars knowing the folks inside wouldn't survive 5 mins in the cold

I then took the merc out and drove around everyone else as I have snow tyres

i can remember the winters of the 60's loads of snow for weeks on end always freezing no double glazing we only had a coal fire in one room and a small gas fire in the other room, no central heating used to have to leave the coal fire stoked up over night and the gas fire on to keep the house sort of warm, ice used to form on the inside of the windows and the curtains used to freeze to the glass we still went to school people still drove cars and life went on as normal.........

Maybe thats teh problem nowadays; heaters in cars are so good (mine has bum warmers), and houses have central heating and masses of insulation that when we walk outside it feels fecking freezing becuase the temeprature difference is so massive.

If our house was a chilly 12-15 degrees, it wouldn't feel quite so bad walking outside in freezing temps.

As for the cars, wide low profile tyres made in Korea intended for a Mediterranian climate, overassited steering, overassisted brakes, fly-by wire throttles in cars that weigh 1.5 metric tons and more. Added to that anyone and his dog can pass a driving test. No wonder most cars and drivers are rubbish.

I saw a Moggy 1000 drive past on my travels today, it brought a smile as I bet it was far better in the snow than most cars today.
