Default The good old days when rallying was rallying.

Its good going down memory lane every now and then

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifOqRvyB9HE

Personally i prefer the McRae,Makinen,Kankunen and Sainz era to the Group B era mainly because the cars on show back then could be bought in a showroom, the Group B`s were fantastic cars but you can`t beat the likes of the Impreza and its unique sounding boxer engine, the Evo Lancer, the Delta Integrale Evo (one of my fav cars), the Cosworths both the Sierra/Escort and the Toyota`s with the likes of the Celica and Corolla etc

Bring back 4 and 5 day rallies that include the likes of Kielder, Grizedale and Chatsworth etc, i know their is virtually no chance of it happening in the WRC again as its more of a 3 day sprint these days to try and keep fans in a tighter area so they spend more money and to make it easier and supposedly better viewing for both fans and TV.

Here's my fave.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuTc4VIdm-o

Love the sound of that engine, just sounds so angry, and the bit at 1:50, sideways up a hill on tarmac. Mental.

There's a version without the music for those that don't like it.

The 80s with Gp B were amazing. I spent ,any a dark night in the forest watching these monsters. The rally is now held in my home town and I cant be arsed going out to watch it now ,thats how bad the WRC has become.

I agree in bringing back 5 day rallies running both day and night. Thats what it is supposed to be all about ,a test of man and machine , nowadays its just a quick blast over 3 very short days.

Brilliant, and those days are lost forever by the looks of it. The WRC is going nowhere - much better to go and see rallies in the smaller championships for some decent action.

What about this? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXV3sEH7PU0

Some great Vids there..... echo the above comments, It's quite simply **** compared to how it used to be

I went to Wales this year but think it will be my last after 17 years due to the current WRC cars being replaced with average Jo cars

i still remember watching the wrc back in 1994 on a Sunday morning on Channel 4. I was 14 at the time and all i wanted to do was drive like Colin Mcrae when i was older! They have now ruined a once great sport and i dont bother watching it anymore

Yeh, its an angry but sweet sounding engine tone. Their is no mistaking a Group B Quattro, similar to how a boxer engine is unmistakable.

I just watched that and it was awesome, remember watching those originally (when 13 lol) and thinking I HAVE to have one of those!! Now I do lol, and a 1995 car.

Tbh I think that the WRC needs to become a pure sport, like F1, where cars are specially designed to do the job. I think they should be based on production cars, but not homologated, as smaller teams could join in. There is enough research into safety and other things, that they will be safer than the old group B.

I also think that the rallies should be 5 days, day and night. And that the service parks and hostings should be near the action, not being ripped off by politicians to be in a crap location in Cardiff, bring back Kielda and other great locations. And get out of Cardiff, to somewhere where servicing and all the teams are in ONE location like they were in Swansea at Velindre, 2 mins from the M4, and everything in one place, near stages.
Was annoying being at Half way this year watching, and then NOT being able to get back to service as it was so far away.

This is my fav era
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWn-m5BwKBw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRMYyQhMo1k

And partly why I've been driving a Subaru for the past 7 years.

For me my interest in rallying died with Burnsie and Mcrae.
Not the sport it once was and the new cars look dull.
I'll give the 2011 season a go but I doubt I'll be watching every rally

it's a shame to see what the wrc has become nowadays, when you watch these videos it just shows what a bland, boring spectacle it really is.

Yeah it was the Manta. How much better is it when all you have is a steering wheel, 3 pedals and a stick?! Not in terms of stage times but for fun, the 80s and 90s surely won't be beaten. Touring cars as well in those days were fantastic.

Shame I was too young to appreciate the 80s, although I went to events in the 90s.

My uncle had a couple of road going Mantas in the 90s too.

Why have a service area at all. In 1986 , the end of the Gp B era the rally started in Bath on a Sunday and didnt get back there until the Thursday. Cars were serviced after each stage roadside and there was a Park Ferme each night in a large town. The whole of the WRC was a huge travelling circus but it was brilliant.

Anyone see Andrew Wood in the Astra 4S Group S protype on the Audi national rally in 1986?
Probably the fastest rally car I ever saw.

I watched the 1988 RAC on DVD last week, reminds you what rallying is all about.
Markku Alen slid down a snow bank, lost 5 minutes when spectators pushed him back on the road and still won the event!

Just a theory.

Do you guys recon that since Tobacco Ads were banned from Racing cars led to the demise of the WRC??

I mean
Scoob - 555 Tobacco,
EVO - Marlboro/Winfield Tobacco,
Peugeot - Gauloises/Marlboro Tobacco,
Ford - SG Gigante Tobacco,
Audi - HB Tobacco,
Porsche - Rothmans Tobacco,

Not an exhaustive list just a quick one I threw together from a 5 mins search for rally cars on google.

Funny how these come to and end in 2005/2006, and most rally teams start to pull out 2007 on. Just goes to show that for all the bad that Tobacco companies do they did plough a LOT of money into the sport, and when you`ve not got money coming from elsewhere that kind of kills it off.

At the moment its just Citroen v Ford and Loeb v the reliabilty of the Citroen, if he finishes a rally without going off or making any serious mistakes then he wins the majority of the time.

Its almost as predictable as the David Haye v Audrey Harrison fight was, you knew Haye was going to retain his title it was just a matter of when it would be signed, sealed and delivered just like with Loeb in the drivers championship.

It was by Propaganda called "Duel", the actual remix that the BBC used for rally report was Propaganda "Jeweled".

Here`s the BBC rally tune if you wanted to rip it as a ringtone.
