The Mrs and I ate at tappas bar in a converted cellar, nice food and wine, cant remember the name or street, but it was quite central. Somebody who lives in Chester should know, or Google it

La Brasserie at The Grosvenor, might still have the £35 for 3 course deal on.

 

The only one I can find looks quite good - but doesn't look as if it is in a cellar.

Trout, If you two like French food, try Francs, 14 Cuppin Street
Chester, Cheshire CH1 2BN Ph. 01244 317 952. Their frog's legs and mussels are scrumptious. Crepe to finish the business with is mouth watering! It is not pompously expensive either.

The other place I would recommend is a Thai resturant Ruan Orchid (sister concern of SIAM restaurant near Chester station). Another reasonable place with delicious food. Don't order needle based dishes there, though. They are a bit sweet. Proper Thai curries there are absolutely gorgeous, so is the fish cake to start with. http://www.siam-teppanyaki.co.uk/

If you want to see one of the biggest wine storing wall(American style) situated in a large glassy restaurant, go to Piccolino Italian chain one on Pepper Street. I am not keen on it meself, like.


There are plenty more places to eat in Chester.

 

That is Fiesta Havana on Watergate Street.

Telfords Warehouse is also a nice venue for food and alcohol over some noisy band of your choice. Atmosphere steps up the food there, though.

Lots of good places to eat in Chester though, probably one of the better places for food in the N/W.

We ate at Joseph Benjamin that was quite nice and a regular meal at the Living Room which was OK. Marco Pierre White's was a huge disappointment - Lemon Souffle excepted.

Her indoors is having a nap - will decide once she wakes. The one other option it the Village Bistro.

We just want somewhere warm - it has been so bloody cold here!

 

As long as we get a photo of your wifes' chest whilst eating her dessert....

 

Menu looks great - the reviews on Tripadvisor really rip into it though!!! Shame as the menu looks tasty.

Old Harkers arms, its on the canal side near railway station, best real ale pub in chester and great food (google it). Really friendly and most importantly not known by the tourists! (lived in chester for 5 years)

 

Get yourself down the chippy lad!

 

me and the missus go to chester quite a lot, we went to a little italian place towards the top end of town and dwn a little alleyway into a courtyard, food was excellent and i proposed in the very same restaurant, i just cant think of its bloody name for the life of me.

FTW - off to drive down there now as her indoors has finally woken from her nap! If we like the look of it we will be eating!

 

Hm, just had a read of those. Some have a point, but on the whole, I enjoyed it and we will be going back. We often drive 100 to 150 mile round trips for a meal on a Saturday night so it has to be good to use half a tank of V-power!

But like I said, Chester is great for food, so plenty of other good places if that does not float your boat.

Couple of good Thais - Ruan Orchid on Lower Bridge St; Siam on City Road (also has a Tepanyaki in same bldg). The Slow Boat is good for Chinese.

Piccolino's or Convivio for Italian, both fairly central. I think I know of the 'proposal' Italian above - Mamma Mia's near the Cathedral?

There are some really good country pubs about also esp in N Wales. If you can be bothered there is a great little place maybe 15 miles West of Chester - 'The Stables' at Saughton Hall - very good.

For something different there is a barge restaurant on the canal, associated with the Mill Hotel.

Well when we left the hotel I thought we were going to Old Harkers pub; but somehow on the way her indoors decided we were going for Thai.

We ended up at the Ruan Orchid - it was very good, a 4/5 from me - tasty, warm, filling, massive menu, great service.

Thanks for all the recommendations - I am sure we will be back in Chester and will be trying some of these places.

The one thing I remember about Chester is visiting when I was little. I was on my dad's knee in a cafe when I knocked a full coffee out his hand and over myself and his white - yes WHITE... think Wham - trousers. We both got burnt and he had to spend the rest of the day walking about with coffee stained white kecks.

Still got the burn marks on my hands now. Random story!
