Which town should be 'promoted' to city status?
A new city will be created to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
So, which town should it be?
Or which should in not be?
And what difference does it make anyway?
I'd like somewhere really obscure or left field to be elevated to city status.
City of Morecambe

Well if you are all (some of you anyway) are being serious, City of Whitehaven then
Should show those Jam Eaters from Workington up. They may have Debenhams but we'd be a city

I agree. Wrexham has been trying for a long time to become a city. It has all the features to become a city; good and bad. Glyndwr University is expanding, so is the night life. Eagles Meadow is also cool. Watching "Avatar" and "Salt" over Ben n' Jerry in their picture-hall was much better than watching them at Chester Greyhound.
Wrexham all the way.

Even when you pop it into google, the figure comes back at 232,662, but looking at the wiki link this includes Reading Urban

Well you learn something every day:
I went to University there too and always assumed it was a city. Guildford for city status then (I was joking about Dudley )

Traditionally, the establishment of a diocesan cathedral in a town conferred city status, and the presence of a University is often used as a rule of thumb in determining a settlement's status. Guildford has both of these institutions, has a rich social history and is a significant economic hub in Surrey, a county with no city.

Years ago someone once told me that if they have a Cathedral it's a city ?
A load of old bo11ocks or true ?
I'm curious to know how Southwark applied, surely they're already in a city (London), but they do have a Catherdral.......
