I've thought about going veggie a few times but would miss the variety.

I never buy steaks, whole chickens etc at home though. I'm not a big meat eater anyway.

Oops - yeah, you are right. I've eaten the odd vegetable or two to be fair!
Especially if they were accompanied by a hearty slab of steak

The traditional Sunday roast used to be the only time of the week many families ate meat, these days people are shovelling it down their throats 24/7 and it's usually of the processed variety.
Still I am not going to let some lentil munching **** on £60k a year tell me what I can and cannot eat. Maybe he should buggar of to China with his buddies at peta and tell them to be more ethical.

Human teeth are designed to be omnivorous.

The human digestive system is designed to be omnivorous.

The human race is omnivorous.

The human race is intelligent.

So a combination of intelligence and adaptable digestive system means that we can choose what we eat. And we could choose what we eat to minimise environmental impact if we so wish.

A great thing this intelligence stuff

I'd agree that the western diet contains a large amount of meat compared to what we historically have consumed.

Yeah but they didn't eat modern quantities of red meat.

Meat is expensive in nature, you have to catch and kill it, then drag it back.

Are we not supposed to have evolved from monkeys? Well, they are still herbivores....maybe thats why they are still monkeys.

Anyway. If any semi-vegetarian who dares spout this nonsense within earshot of me and then condones eating fish or using certain animal based produce can GTFO before I open a can of whoop *** on them. Industrial fishing and crop farming must be the most ecologically damaging practices as of current.

Ok if someone is Vegan, fair play...but if one eats a meat substitute, then you do have to question why does the body crave the taste of it?

Secondly one needs to consider the ecological damage caused by food production as a whole, not just meat. For example crop farming; in rainforests, that's highly ecological isn't it? Producing food is a global necessity, and that is why its the world's largest industry; Everybody has to eat, so naturally the global size of this industry makes it damaging to environment as it constantly seeks to provide more and more food for an ever expanding global population. Doesn't matter if its meat or veg; you need to level a forest to produce either.

Anyone can go to to fairy land, and then think they can fix the world with narrow minded ideologies. There is a name for these types of people; Fools.

Look it's simple, if God didn't want us to eat animals then why did he make them from meat

Also take note chop dodgers us meat eaters are protecting your foodstuffs, if we didn't eat cows, sheep, pigs etc. then they would rapidly multiply and run wild destroying massive vegetable crops in the process. The we'd end up having to shoot them all anyway to protect the crops

Yep human teeth and guts are very dissimilar to a carnivores, some garbage been spouted above.

Take your point above Ali-B, but farmed animals don't live on fresh air, they have to be fed industrially farmed crops, so you end up using 10x the land to keep and feed animals rather than just eating the crops directly.

As for the vegan thing, have you looked into how practical it actually is? Not many restaurants provide a vegan option whereas pretty much all of them (in the UK) provide a choice for lacto-ovo vegetarians. Quorn isn't even vegan as it contains eggs. Becoming vegan means a huge lifestyle choice and sacrifices, whereas becoming vegetarian is pretty easy. If being vegan was easier I bet many vegetarians would become so for the reasons you point out, but it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation

You are just side stepping the point though, crop production be it direct or for animals is ecologically damaging in both forms. Saying its damaging if its used for animal farming, but then say ingits all ok if it goes straight to human consumption is somewhat contradictory.

10x the land per unit of energy for human consumption is about right I believe. The animals expend most of the energy themselves remember...

I'm not saying crop farming isn't environmentally harmful, but crop farming for farm animal consumption is extremely inefficient and difficult to justify when there's not enough food to go around.

My understanding is that the human body to be tip top really does need some sort of meat intake.

The body doesn't produce Vitamin B12 and we get that from eating meat. Veggies can and do suffer from B12 deficiency which causes hair loss and permanent nerve damage.

I also fail to see how eating meat indicates a lower level IQ?

A work colleague is quite strictly a veggie and has not been well recently. He was asked, could it be food poisoning? "Oh no, it can't be. I don't eat meat"?

WTF?

Just to reiterate what others have said. A massive amount of crop farming - e.g. the rain forest destruction - is by companies like McDonalds to grow beef for burgers.

Some of the most productive crop farming in the world is also the most efficient and environmentally friendly - but it is primarily for direct consumption and is carried out on farms that average 3 acres in size that are locally owned.

Crop farming does not have to be damaging - but it takes an awful lot of food to feed the animals we eat as the Western diet has become dependent on meat by habit not necessity.
