Default Argh, When an easy job turns bad

When will i ever learn that I just can't do normal things right! Due to the rainy season starting and knowing that the drainage system in my car was blocked I thought i'd clean it out today. Now to get at it you need to remove the front wipers and then take the plastic covers off, easy peasy yep? NO!

I got one wipe arm off ok with a bit of WD40 and the second one, well i never got it off and ended up snapping the linkage and stabbing the palm of my hand with a screwdriver and lodging a piece of plastic into my index finger!

So I gave up and have came in to have a cup of tea and a trawl on the internet for a new linkage. I learnt a valuable lesson today, if i'm in a good mood, i should sit in the house and not move incase something happens.

I know what you mean.

Changed the sparkplugs and coilpacks last week on my Skyline. Strained a muscle in my shoulder, aggravated a cut finger, and to top it off realised it was the wrong coilpacks after I put everything back together and it would not start.

This is after months of shoulder problems so it was really idiotic of me to do this but the old plugs were tight as hell to get off, and I didn't expect them to be so bad. It's not an injury to the problem I had before (rotator cuff) but still annoying. Feels like a mild deltoid strain...couple of weeks probably.

yep been there, done that

accidently drained my "sealed for life" transmission fluid instead of my engine oil

and stuck my tongue to a freezer - amongst other things

not on the same day thank god - that would have been a real downer

Forgetting to replace the sump plug on my old car when refilling with oil is my finest achievement

One ******* litre before I realised too

Well a new linkage/motor was gonna cost me £150/160 and as the car isn't even worth that much, I decided to fix it myself. Off to Halfords I went and returned with Araldite(sp?), Jubilee clips and a Halfords Advanced Socket set cus it was going for £20 and seemed like a bargain!

Well all didn't go well removing the linkage, so i employeed the help of my neighbour and some vicegrips. After more cut fingers and aggrivation its now off the car. STILL the wiper arm with not come off the linkage and thats after beating the shit out of it with a hammer, it is literally welded to it. It made me slightly less annoyed that my neighbour informed me the last time he tried to do the same he smashed the front window of his van.

So, as we stand at the moment, the hallway of house is now my workshop, I have glued the linkage, used a coathanger to make a U-Clip and attached it using the jubilee clip. We will find out tomorrow how well it will all work.

So much text how about about an ironic pic of my handy work!

Is the wiper held on by an interference fit? If so it would be a bitch to get off.

The tool in the link is just a small gear puller. The wiper is pressed on to a tapered spline. Do you know a small independent garage? Take the part to them, they will pull it off for you in a jiffy

Great stuff MMT thats exactly what its like. There is a great garage just up the road from me, its just nice doing things for yourself sometime but it looks like a pure fail at the moment.

If you could support the wiper arm (just each side of the thread) on vice jaws, a sharp tap with a hammer on the threaded bit should release it. Put the nut back on first, wind it on a few threads and hit the nut so you dont damage the threads.

Have you tried giving it a quick squirt of WD40, screw the nut back on a few threads, hold the arm and then give the nut a fucking good crack with a hammer? I reckon you'll liberate it

It is worth putting a thin film of oil on the sparking plug threads before installing, and they need only be just tight enough to form a seal with the soft washers. Saves all that pain and they are less likely to break off too.
