Default Quen Elizabeth..the boat!

Went on the QEII as a child ...great!!

What the hell happened to sexy ships..I love boats..latest one and most of the others look like a city centre on the sea.

Sorry, just thought the latest boat looks rubbish!

They've lost the lines as they try to build 'em bigger and pack more entertainment and passengers in.

QMII is as good as it gets currently.

Pretty hightech too (podular engine/propellar thingies) - which is why it keeps breaking down (modern engineering)

I once went on the Sky Princess - one of the last steam turbine cruise ships, it was designed to withstand more difficult seas like the QEII, unlike the much bigger "fun boats", sadly its now a fun boat in Spain and I think its been laid up due to the recession.

Could always go on an arctic cruise on a Russian icebreaker

Azipods - electric motor in a pod with a propeller attached, and all underwater! Often powered by a Wartsila diesel engine prime mover, which of course never breaks down.

The RAF sent us to Canada for our training via New York on the good old "Caronia" cruise ship. It was a real original type ship and we all enjoyed the trip.

We came back after training on a CN ship to Liverpool which was not in the same class.

old one http://www.qe2.org.uk/pictures_exterior.html

Looks like the old one could be one of the lifeboats to the new one!

We reckon we saw her doing sea trials off the coast here, that often happens with large boats.

Very impressive.

The difference is, being a liner, the QE2 (and also the QM2) was designed to get across the North Atlantic quickly, in all kinds of weather

Cruise ships tend to stay in warmer areas with calmer seas, and travel more sedately, So can get away with being more top heavy and less sleek in appearance.

For what it's worth, the QE2 and Canberra, being born of the '60s, came in for similar criticism when they were new, for not being as sleek and luxurious as their predecessors. Although since amongst those predecessors were Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, United States, Normandie, etc, some of that criticism was possibly justified.

I used to install computer systems on cruise ships and all in all QEII is still by far my favourite. Coronia was good too like a mini version of the qe. Been on a couple of P&O's and they are just not the same. Cunard have it right. The only ships that still have 1st Class etc. QEII now a floating hotel in Dubai

You sure Les

I think the original Queen Elizabeth is at the bottom of Hong Kong harbour, Queen Mary is the one at Long Beach

Yup, seen the QM at long beach too (along with the Spruce Goose whee it was still there). Impressive ship.

Pity they cut the engines open for the tourists

The new ones look like floating apartment blocks.

Correct

I had to pop down to Soton on Friday and saw this moored up, looked very impressive but not as impressive as this sight earlier in the year, QM2 on a visit to Sydney, they had to moor it in the Navy's Garden Island dock because the Harbour was full, I just remember thinking how blody tall is this thing, it peered over everything.

I had a hotel room at the ANA that overlooked that lot from the bathroom

QM2 doesn't look too bad....actually in proportion

QE2 looks more what I imagine prison ships would look like....

Yes I know CPD, I went to HK shortly after it happened. I did mean the QM in fact, not sure how you misunderstood me. Maybe the post sequence.
