Sorry no idea as not tried either. Have you not demo'd both as would suggest you do rather than rely on other peoples opinions.

I like that currys deal at £999 saying see our half price cable deal. The deal with a 1.4 hdmi cable is £1049 so what the cable is usually £98??? Get one off Amazon for a fiver.

I don't think they'll be any difference in 3d quality , but you will get a the truest black with a led

LED is sharper (well can be) is typically thinner and will outlast a plasma, saying that my plasmas still going strong after 7 years. Don't LED TV's also project "yellow" where plasmas don't?

reading on the av forum site, plasmas can get Burn on the screen and samsung seem to get Ghosting on the LED screen.

I have seen demos on the Panny 50" Plasma 3D, the Sony 40" LCD 3D and the Samsung 40" LED 3D.

The Panny was fantastic, the Sony was dog ****, the Samsung was acceptable.

for £2.5k the Panny should be good!

As I sell all these screens my opinion on viewing them day in day out is that cheap to moderately priced/specced LED screens are shite and nothing but another fad to get more money out of your pocket. Most moderately priced LED's are out performed by cheaper LCD rivals, its not until you go to mega money does the benefits of LED become apparent.

Plasma is still the only TV panel i'd be happy to take home and use myself.

We've had a LED for nealy a year now, much better imho than the LCD it replaced, SD and HD. You can see the difference when visiting friends with LCD.

Not see enough of 3D to make judgment though.

+1 I see around 6 different tvs each day and set them up.

Plasma is still the best screen.

A cheap 40" LED is around £650 a moderately priced one being around £900 and an expensive screen ranges from £1300 and over. If you were in my store, I could show you an LCD for £450 that will out perform every LED screen we stock under the £900 bracket. The only downside is that the LCD screen does not support 3D.

I have no doubt that your LED will be better than an older LCD but neither are anywhere near as natural in image as most of the Panasonic Plasma range. Many LED screens are running processors that artifically bring depth to imagine which is all well and good watching Avatar but on everything else it makes the imagine look like...well a film set!

Seem we do live in the same world re price ranges . It aslo explains the differences i see between my old and new sets. My replacment is in the higher end bracket. My old LCD would of been mid range at the time, which would now be budget i suppose.

The first night we had the LED fast and furious was on, we sat laughing at it as it looked so un-natural (i had and have never seen the film as it's not my cup o tea). But it did indeed look like a film set.

The 3D is immaterial, it will look the same on any set..

its the overall picture thats the kicker..

Plasma - good for films and fast motion - dark blacks

LCD - cheaper than plasma - not good for motion & blacks, and colours transients - HD on a LCD is the the equivalent of standard def on a plasma

LED - atifacts are visible and colours are overbright. - blacks looked purple

also, is LED just slimmer, if wall mountings not coming into it, is LCD better value for money. (but does it have 3D?)


Mum's thinking is that if she's got Sky HD, she might as well have a tv that has 3D, just incase she want to make full use of the £61 per month cost Sky charge.

cus at £999 for the plasma 3D, I might be able to talk her into a Onkyo Amp for 5.1

Have you looked at any of these TV's in the flesh yet? Please do not take mine or anyone elses word for what is better because what is better is a matter of opinion (which is why i bought a 147 instead of an Impreza Sport)

If your popping into a shop, just ask how it connected up and make sure they show you it on different sources.

The reason I asked about eyesight, is that 3D is a waste of money if you have poor eyesight. A friend of mine can't see 3D due to his poor vision so its a very good idea to bring your mum along with you to see how she gets on with 3D. I myself have a lazy eye and find it a bit of a ballache to watch 3D as I have to really focus.

Panasonic are apparently going to be releasing a 50GT20 soon, the 42 is already out and I would say it will be a great machine although it will be a bit pricey compared to the Samsung 50" you have listed. Panny are offering a 5 year warranty at the moment though so it may be worth the extra outlay.

Not really. Don't generally stock them. I actually don't rate Samsung due to them being pretty unreliable and lacking an form of decent sound quality. Picture wise they are generally very good though.

lol, I'm on my second sammy now, the first one LCD 32" £1500 only 5years ago, my father in laws had off me, when I had a new one last year 37" £650. Shows you how they come down.
and sound.. well mine runs through the Onkyo 607 with Qacoustic 1010i speakers... sounds very good.

Opposite way round to me, £800 Sammy 5 years ago and £1300 LG last year

Sound not an issue for me either, mine runs through a Sony STRDN1000 7.1 with HDMI.

thanks to ppl on here, it made it good to go knwing a few things about the plasma,

so deals been done,
mum went for the 50" plasma at Currys, LED was too expensive and also the LCD picture was too sharp for her, she liked the plasma pic and price


then the onkyo 308 deal at superfi.

guess what I'll be doing this weekend then!

the Onkyo 308 is a cracker wee Amplifier. If I can give you abit of advice don't buy the Onkyo package including speakers. Spend a few extra quid and get these instead.

I've demo'd both PDP and LCD(LED) 3D TV's recently, and the PDP (Pana VT20) won hands down. Toshiba are rumoured to be nearly market-ready with their 'spec-less' 3D screen.
