No, not another thread on the under/over payment row. This one is more personal.
My lad's been unemployed, except for casual work, since the beginning of February. Every time he GETS any work, they give him an emergency tax code, basic rate, which is taxing him far too high. He couldn't claim it back until he got permanent work and thus got his "proper" tax code, 647.
But isn't that what everyone gets? Well, yes, but not, apparently, if you change jobs
So there we have a system which penalises the less well off......until they are well off again
Now, he has permanent work again. BUT: he's still on a temporary code as they won't be able to update their system for at least four weeks despite having been sent a P45 LAST WEEK.
Time to simplify the tax laws, methinks, and the first thing ought to be that they have to pay us interest on any money owed us, same as we have to do them.
Note to HMRC: You are supposed to be public servants. You have computers. There is little excuse for the time it takes to sort out problems.

Why are they giving him BR code????
One of the Companies I work for, have loads of youngsters coming and going. I always set them up, no matter how little they are going to be paid and use 647L W1M1., even if they only stay a week. If they are students it is NT and if it's a first job it's 647L.
They can earn about £110 a week without incurring tax and ni.
I'm lost on this one, alcazar

Looks to me like they think he has more than one casual job. They really are a bunch of goons. BR only applies to a second job.
I would go down there, if it is near enough and give them a right talking too. Good luck.
