So there's a nuclear explosion observation point near my house
No really!
So, after a bit of looking around on http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/index.php I discover ROC posts. These are posts dotted around the country manned by the Royal Observer Corps. Their role was to document nuclear explosions and their effects in the event of an attack.
More info can be found on 28DL in the ROC forum and here http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/roc/index3.html Chances are, there's one not too far from you!
I have to say, I'm gobsmacked by this! I'm into my military stuff but up till about a week ago I had no idea these existed at all and then yesterday I found two within fives miles of where I live...I've been cycling within 200yds of one recently!
On with the pics then, this is the nearest one to me and it's not in great condition. The hatch has been broken off and it's been filled in.
The hatch in its new resting place
This is what remains of the foundations of an aircraft spotting shelter
I also found a more complete site, about 5 miles from where I live, again I've been past this many times and didn't have a clue about it!
Unfortunately it's well locked up! I've seen pics from inside and there are still things in there!
Pretty cool huh?

Interesting quite a few by me that i never knew about,a couple have been demolished and had housing built on them..I remember when me and my mates would go playing in the bomb shelters, was a few sites where i lived and we would go looking for them on our choppers and bmx bikes ,including some underground laboratories next to the Factory where they made the Ammunition during WW2.It taken us ages to find some of the shelters,i reckon was some still that we didn't find but it was Fun..

Nuclear strikes were a serious business during the Cold War. The possibilty of nuclear war was very real and we were living under a constant threat.
Its also surprising how many sites of various kinds are still left from WW2.

Sadly the OPs dont offer much protection. They can take moderate blast forces ok, so you will live through the blast, and you will then be able to climb out and take a report and pass that report on using the comms systems that they had. However, you will die from radiation exposure at most sites.
Most major cities have a proper fall out shelter though for invited guests, not many of them are open to the public but if you have a dig around on the net there are the odd ones here and there that do tours.

Some good info on those sites. I've always been facinated by underground structures, going to look at the one that is 1 mile away from my house (as the crow flies) next to the golf course !

Bloody hell ! I never thought id see this on a forum.
Me and my friend went down a few of them, we had one 1/2 mile from my house.
We decided to go "spotting", as we found them quite fascinating. They are actually early warning nuclear bomb attack stations and monitors, they are all linked in a triangle shape with each other.
Basically, the worker listened to a speaker which beeped. The pattern of beeb depended on if we were being attacked.
If we were to be attacked, this is where we would get the infamous 4 minute warning from ! Beleive it or not, the early warning stations were still manned 24 hours per day until the early 90's !!
IIRC, one guy has turned a station ( which is in his back garden ) into a wine cellar !
If there is any still open, its well worth a looky We went spotting them in the late 90's and then again in '02, and most then were either flooded or filled in.
Remember in the 80's when we were all given out the protect and survive manuals ? The film Threads ? ( what a gruesome film that is ) !
Its all very interesting, and just how close we were to pressing the button only a select few will no !

There are loads around Cambridge! Have a look on 28DL, there's a zip file to download, open that in Google Earth and you'll see all the posts countrywide
