Tips on presentation please
No, not the way I dress
As my first year as an apprentice comes to a close soon, one of the last things to do is a presentation. I work at Corus and they have a 16 part Health & Safety Management System. There are 16 groups of 3/4 apprentices and each has to do one section of said system.
My group got number 8 - Management of change.
Now at work today me and the other lads have put together a simple 7 slide Powerpoint presentation which I'm tweaking at home now (the other lads are 17 and 19 and aren't really bothered about it). The major issue is that there will be the S****horpe site manager, Sean Lyons there as well as plenty of other high powered directors from Corus and Tata Steel. Yeah, I'm bricking it a little
Presentation is to be approx. 8 minutes long. Our presentation will go the following...
1. Introduction with slides and short speech (aim's of presentation, what we're talking about etc)
2. Definition of Management of change (with slide)
3. Principles of M.O.C. (again with a slide)
4. Tolerability of risk - the upside down triangle diagram with the risk numbers, A.L.A.R.P. etc (with slide)
5. Requirement for T.O.R. (with slide)
6. An example of a system which would use M.O.C. (with slide diagram to help explain)
7. Outro, pleasentries etc (with slide)
Just looking for any tips on any aspect really as I wanna make a good impression even if the other guys aren't too bothered. Being the eldest (and most bothered) silly bollocks here has done most the work and even written speech cards for the other to read off, as well as construting the Powerpoint.
TIA
Andy

People always make the same stupid mistakes with presentations, they read what's on the slides. It's like having the two Ronnies repeating the same lines - don't do it.
Also try making the slides without any bullet points

A really good presentation is where the slides contain a mix of pictures and words and not too long either, you must also not read from the screen (like its a teleprompter) but talk around what your slide says - the people will read the slides as you talk.
Remember to breathe and be natural with it....

Aye, already cottoned onto the 'no reading directly' bit. Thats why I did like abbreviated slides with speech cards so what is said on the slides can be expanded upon. If I do it Ill be happy, whether the other lads do time will tell. Team thing but hope the others pull their fingers out.

I have always found Power Point presentations desperately boring but a necessary evil
First thing is to make sure the basics are working - like slides in correct order and equipment working. Sounds obvious I know but it is so easy to get the fundamentals wrong. And I speak from experience.
If I was covering MOC I think I would kick off by involving the audience with a challenging question, a bit outside the box. Perhaps ask if they want to be directors in 20 years because if they do they will have to be one step ahead and face the realities of the marketplace and change accordingly. Not an easy task. Just look at GM - they stayed locked in a time warp and the company nearly folded. Compare them with Tata or Branson or even Michael Ryan and you get the drift. etc etc. But I hope you get the idea.
Then on to the slides
Hope it goes well.

Hi There,
Keep it simple, the slides are speaker support, they are there to support your presentation only.
Use a minimum, keep them to the point and not too much on each slide.
Do not mix styles of text and silly sounds, moving images.
If you like create it and send it to me and I'll go through it and make changes (if/as required) but give me half a day to do so.
PM me if you want any help.
Paul

I've just gone through it and gonna put a few "buzz" words on a card so I can expand on them and not read sentances of text from the card.
The Powerpoint has been tweaked just now. All slides are in the same format, text etc as this screen shot of the first page. 7 slides, all very clear, very simple and require explaining so nobody will get it easy
(Yes I know you can see a couple bullet points on one of the other pages but these are rare and not scattered about).
I'm doing the introduction of the names and what the presentation is about. Then later in the presentation I am doing a slide on an example of MOC in action within a system. This will be a really simplified almost metaphorical situation but will emphasise the importance of MOC and all the necessary add ons such as 'tolerability of risk' and 'as low as reasonably practicable' perfectly. Thats my bits done and I've requested the other lads know their bits tonight. If they don't, not a lot I can't do as I refuse to mother them as I'm older

If you're not using a microphone then talk at a volume you think the furthest person away in the room can hear and add 10%.
Too many people talk too quietly even though they're certain they don't.
Everyone in the room needs to be able to hear you clearly.

That's actually something I didn't even think about. The conference centre isn't massive but easily seats a couple hundred I'd say. Little one step raised stage at the front. You could use a microphone or not in all fairness. Will find out tomorrow morning I guess.

According to some holier than thou 'trying to get in the NSR cool gang' ****, I should just grow up and stop pretending I'm good on my crappy decks Assume you think differently as do a few other members.
I'll make sure I change the dj bit in the morning

Tbh, they mainly read from the slides, and that was boring as hell. The only thing that made it almost bearable was the more interactive parts (normally I don't love that sort of thing). It's one thing to read from cards, to remember what you need to, but not from slides, especially if you don't elaborate, which they hardly did. Any questions really fooked things up, so be prepared if there is the opportunity for them.
I couldn't do presentations as I just don't have the confidence, this is just my opinion based on what I have had to sit through.
Good luck, and if you hold your own well, don't worry about the others too much. (they will show themselves up if not participating/being unprepared- it should be ok if it doesn't fall apart without their input).

Mate don't listen to them, as they know **** all when it comes to house/trance!
Funny how the same old faces come out on Trance/house threads whitout any bitching! Funny eh
All those from that era seem to get along and just buzz of the tunes that brought us closer together

Don't know if it has been mentioned already, but speak at a pace that feels just too slow and leave a gap beyween sentences and statements that feels just too long.... you will find it is actually spot on for the listeners as everyone talks faster than they think when speaking publically for the first few times.

dont forget to add some eye contatc with the audience here and there whilst talking shows you know your stuff that you are talking about rather than just reading from a card or screen. good luck

It is now. Was the 8th of 16 so did it around 10.30am. Went well. Only negative feedback for me personally was looking at the screen when explaining an example of M.O.C.
Plnrt of positives too and the presentation was 7.20 long so close to the 8 min target. Some otters were 3-4 mins long in comparison.

Respect to the man in the Ice-cream van! Presentations is something i've never been able to deal with as I get well nervous and can't read or even string a sentence together. Apparently once I get going though I become mildly amusing but it still puts the fear in me even thinking of doing it!

Glad it went well. I love doing presentations (but speak/performing to big crowds etc has never been a problem)...
Yeh, I'd have mentioned the whole "looking at the screen" thing, but moreso as a presentation technique/skill that will improve. I would imagine that they were more interested in the content and your understanding of the subject material.
Well done though
