Default Number Plate transfer

I bought a car that has a number plate that the seller wants back for his car.

I have all the reg document here with me.

What is the process of moving the plate from one car to another and time scales and cost..?

The car i have is still in his name, and we kept it like this to speed up the process and for me to be able to take the car away..

Any thoughts?

It costs about £80 to transfer from one car to another, you need to take all the documentation to your local DVLA office and they can sort it there and then. Alternativly you can send it through the post, but it obviously takes longer.

It is straightforward enough to do, the previous owner has to do it since he owns the reg. It is indeed quickest to go to the DVLA office, they do it on the spot.

Hopefully he has still got the original number plates for the car since that is most likely to be the number it will have after the transfer.

thanks, can you go to the dvla office and get it put on Retention, rather then sending the docs off?

and does this cost £80

The previous owner needs to put it on retention. He will have to pay of course.

Retention is about £120 and it takes about a week for all the paper work to return.

I've had a private plate for 12 years now, it's a pretty painless procedure, it's all here

FYI It's up to you if you let him have it back. In the eyes of the law that reg is now yours.

Why should he refuse to let him have it back anyway?

I dno, just furnishing the OP with the fact.

Perhaps if the reg is of very high financial value.

In most cases it is a gentlemans agreement between buyer and seller to return the reg to the seller, but i have known it to go baps up

Yes you are right. Surely the seller would be sharp enough to agree that if he wants to keep the number though and make sure that he does not lose it.

The owner should transfer the plate before selling his car (as I did with my Spec C) as otherwise the new owner can lay claim to it if he's an **** of course My BiL sold his car with a private plate & "agreed" with the new owner that he could get the plate back ... he then heard that the new owner had sold it, when he checked indeed it was sold

TX.

Yes it is true that the DVLA will assume ownership by the name in which the car is registered. You certainly have to get transfer or retention done before transfer of ownership to be safe.

TX.

Yeah my neigbour lost hers to a garage when she traded her car, the bloke was as TX says an ****.

I always put mine on retension inbetween cars and if it's on when i'm advertising then i clearly state the fact it is not going with the car.

Closest i came to loosing it was to an insurance co when i had a write off, greedy baskets
