USA visa question
I was told that you need to have held a passport for 3 months before they will let you in. This for British citizen who has lost current passport and needs to get a replacement but also wants to travel to States in a few weeks.
I can phone the Embassy but I wondered if anyone on here knows the score.
Cheers, d

I cannot see how if you hold a valid, active passport that they would turn you away. I presume you are going as a holiday maker and not on business?
If you get a really **** immigration official, he may ask you some questions. However, I work for UK Immigration and would say the best thing to do is check with the embassy and remember to get a name if possible!
Good Luck

OK guys, thanks - well Camo (and scooby do) anyway
I phoned USA Embassy at bloody premium rate, greedy sods, and info I heard about 3 month thing is, in USA speak, a load of bull!
It's for my son who wants to go and play guitar in a LA nightclub for a few weeks so I don't know what sort of Visa he needs.
Cheers, d

Whatever you do you need to fill in the ESTA on line form or they won't let you in.
It's free at the moment but Congress have just passed a request to be able to charge for doing it.

I had 6 months left on my old passport so decided the best thing to do would be to get a new passport sorted before travelling to the US a few years back because I heard they could be funny with nearly expired passports.
I turned up with 2 month old passport and got turned over for 3 hours in LAX.
I wasn't allowed to ask any questions or to call my friend who was picking me up to tell him I had been detained. They just kept me in a room full of similarly confused people. Some people kicked off and they got taken to another room.
I was sh1tting my pants.... they immigration people were right arse4oles.
Eventually I was given the all clear. I then asked why I had been detained. They said "your passport was less than 6 months old".
I just kept quiet and got out of there ASAP.
My advice to your son is keep phone on silent, send a text to whoever is meeting him before passport control to let them know he's arrived (try not to be seen), then turn it off. If he gets detained. Keep quiet and be passive. You'll get out quicker.

Or learn a bit of Arabic and started whispering very quietly to yourself, in a chanting sort of way....

I travel to the states about 3 or 4 times a year. Another time in 2004 they asked me at passport control "Do you know any Muslims".
I was a bit taken a back so I said something like "erm.. probably ..." and the guy just stared at me... then he squinted.
So I said in a questioning kind of way "erm... but I don't like them very much??"
The guy then stamped my passport and said "have a good stay sir".
Phew. Close one.

They're not all that bad really.
I happened to land on my actual birthday once and the Immigration officer handed back my passport with a cheery 'have a happy birthday..'
Took me back a bit but was nice.
