What wine to buy someone?
A cousin of one of my friends is doing me quite a large favour in a couple of weeks, mainly for my wife tbh but she doesn't even know about it yet.. Quite random I know seeing as neither of us have even even met this chap.
He is basically lending us a brand new SLK for the weekend, (her dream car). Now he wont accept any money for this, but my mate has told me his wife is partial to a nice bottle of white wine.
I'm stuck on this and would welcome any suggestions on what kind to get and where to get it from.
So any wine buffs here?

How much do you want to spend? In my experience (8 years at Oddbins and a bit of a buff who keeps a "cellar"), a wine retailing at around £25-35 will wipe the floor with sub £10 stuff. Which you'd expect, but I'd say one or two quality bottles beats half a case of average wine anyday. You have to bear in mind that the tax for a £3 bottle is the same as for a £300 bottle, so you're paying a much larger proprotion of cost for the actual wine when you pay more......
Best wine I've ever drunk was a bottle of Margaux '85, which was bought as a wedding present in '92, drunk a couple of years ago - but this is selling at around £190 a bottle now?!

We'll what I'd say is
Are you a miserable b@stard and therefore going to buy only 1 bottle of wine?
If you not then I'd suggest looking at a one off deal from Laithwaites wines?
I've never had a bottle from them that I didn't like - if fact if you get a bottle you don't like then just send it back and they will refund you.

Hard to make a recommendation based solely on a preference for white. Luan Pra Bling's first three choices are chardonnay and the last is sauvignon blanc - chalk and cheese. Both great grapes, but completely different in style.
I personally like chardonnay, so on that basis would suggest this, or, if you want to push the boat out a bit, then this
I do think you get what you pay for though and I'm rarely disappointed with anything that costs more than a tenner. Of course, Champagne is also available in white and most women love it, so that could be a safe choice!

Good idea re a case from Majestic or someone with maybe them recommending say six different wines.Reckon £75 (for maybe £150 worth of bottles)
.Is she a real real buff or just likes white wine? Most people wouldn't have a clue about £30+ a bottle wines.Me included

The other thing is that there is still a large element of personal taste as to what's the "best" buy in any price bracket. For instance, I'm not a great Gewurtztraminer fan - which doesn't make it a bad wine, just one that you shouldn't buy for me!
I'm a times wine club member (all part of Laithwaites), and haven't had a bad bottle from them yet. If you look on their website at their "fine wine" range, you'll see a reasonable selection of whites ranging from £15-£50 / bottle, and I'd bet they'll all be pretty good wines for the money; they also do nice mixed cases.

Buckfast, awesome, never heard that name in years.
Reminds me of a time when i was around 17 and had went to a car "cruise" (forgive me father for i have sinned) and my mate came in somebody elses car, complete with a load of "bucky"
He got slaughtered on the stuff and proudly declared "right, im off to find me a horny bitch"
He staggered off out the car park, hilarious, we had no idea where he went, but he was back within 30 mins with some blonde skank on his arm
"Told yas i would find a horny bitch, she has just sucked me off:
Never tried the stuff myself, almost scared to now
