Default NI/Ireland questions - transport related

Anyone in that area that knows: -

1) How long does it take to drive from Dublin to Armagh? Rough mileage?

2) Is there a reasonable train or coach service between the two towns?

I will do some Googling but there may be someone on here with answers at their fingertips

Thanks, David

By car your looking about an hour and a half drive. Don't know about trains/buses but I wouldn't anyway as Armagh is full of reprobates.

Thanks chaps - not looking too promising at the moment. Train is over 2 half hours so must take the scenic route. Not much better on coaches but will keep looking.......

Thanks for input though. David

Just make sure you have at least 1 or 2 bottles of Buckfast to win over the locals.

My son has my old car in Dublin and needs to drive over the border and leave it for an MoT. I had made some arrangements (with help from SN) but he screwed it all up so possibly needs to get there and back by public transport. Hence question

If I don't help then he'll be driving around without MoT and possible invalid insurance so I am the one who gets done as vehicle owner.

Can he legitimately drive to a garage to get car fixed for MoT or is it only to testing centre with pre-booking?

insurance covers you only driving to a testing centre in northern ireland. i dont know about the validity of driving in the south without MOT. once you're over the border you will be fine. you will need to have a pre booked time with an MOT assessment centre.

Can he not get the bus from dublin to newry. the get an ulsterbus from newry to armagh. a bus leaves newry every hour and takes 55 minutes.

Thanks - I had nearly fixed something up for this all to happen In Newry until my sweet boy said he had a pal in Armagh who would help him. So I have booked a test in Armagh and also registered the car for NI which is a prerequisite.

From what you are saying it may be easier to get from Newry to Dublin by public transport? Not sure if I can now change test date to a new centre without losing my money.

Aaaagh. Sons - who'd have 'em.

OK that's very helpful - many thanks. I read that you have to have the Registration Document in the car when you take the test which I wasn't told before. It is currently in my desk drawer at home deliberaltely as it's safe there

Looks like I may have to post this to my son ASAP.

yes some MOT centres insist on seeing the V5, other don't. better get it sent and stress the importance of not loosing it. good luck hope it passes. one bit of advice they are pretty tight over here on emissions, so make sure he at least gets it checked before he goes.

Thanks again. Well it's a 17 year old diesel (205 XRDT) with 200k on the clock so we need a lot of fingers crossed. It used to smoke a bit but it now has my fuel catalyst in the tank (the one that Subaru use) which has virtually stopped all the smoke and it runs very sweetly

Use the new motorway and you'll comfortably do it in 1 1/2 hrs even in the old oil burner.
