Ipad
Bought one to investigate development possibilities.
Here are my thoughts based on someone who has used Apple products for less than a hour in my life before, but happy to program microcontrollers in assembly language.
Always thought Apple products were cut down, locked down and for smug people.
Cut a SIM down and filed it to fit to get the same Three 150MB that lasts 90 days for a £5 top up that can then be used to give a further month of data, works great. Vast majority of use will be Wifi though.
Reception and GPS are good. Compass is iffy.
Responsiveness is usually impressive, occasionally lags but doesn't miss user input, just delays in showing it.
App store exits after you've selected an app.
Can't find a way to delete the entire contents of the address bar in Safari?
No SD, USB, flash, video output, camera does limit some possibilities compared with our £150 Asus netbook with a very light build of XP on it, and it seems a bit prehistoric to have to plug it in via USB to your computer to sync with the horror that is Itunes.
Now I can appreciate the smugness of Apple people because a lot of things do just work and are mostly intuitive and slick with hugely impressive performance for what is really quite limited processing power, but there is something Mickey Mouse feeling about the whole thing, it feels like a toy. Nice that there isn't really a load of updates to do. A good toy though, fun to use, would work well in a car for engine management purposes. Makes me more interested in getting an IPhone 4 when available on Three.
It is still on the old OS until they update it for the Ipad I believe.

The other thing is the App store, it appears to be mostly full of rubbish. Not found a killer app yet that does anything you can't do on Android, but the main difference bewteen it and my Android phone is speed and a big screen.
Am I right in saying an Iphone 4 is basically an Ipad with a phone, cameras, OS 4 and a smaller screen which has almost the same resolution? And the Ipad is a fast Ipod touch with a bigger higher res screen?

It will do that until you get the ios4 with multi-tasking

Double clicking or drag to select backspace should do it

If it is in a corporate environment you can push profiles to it for certain apps
using drop box (free with 2GB you can whack on stuff without itunes, but it is cloud based so you need a connection to display the items unlike the synching with itunes )
VGA to iPad connector for video output

I am inclined to agree with John
Ant, the Mac Book was cheaper than the iPad yeah? lol
Oh thought not, invalid point
Was great on the plane for me, worth the money, but definatly just a toy.

So how much is a 64gb 3G? Compare it just a MacBook. For the extra money I'll go with the MacBook no restrictions, more space also don't have to encode the movie files to put on the ipad

lol nope no auto defense, just being sensible about it. I could use my laptop instead or my iPod, but there is a reason I dont lol.
iPad is good for its purpose, but it still an over priced toy. No need for an 1100-1200 laptop, my little netbook does the PC functional things I need, and the iPad is a tp for plane trips etc.
£600 for the extra function, good for you I say lol
iPad expensive toy
MacBook more expensive still but more function.
iPhone, still crap haha

Since all the programming stuff I use is PC based, OS X would be a bit pointless for my "daily driver" laptop. I didn't like OS X in my brief trials with it. For a touch device the toy like OS is good though. All feels a bit like an adult playing with Lego when there are no kids around though

Ask most people why they bought a Laptop or Netbook and the answer will be to read email and browse the web. They would be better off with an iPad.

Does that happen a lot? I'd have to go back years to find a mp3 or video in my email inbox.
Anyhow, I believe there are apps that will open the attachments.

I often receive attachments (engine datalogs) in .csv format that I like to view in a cheap open source spreadsheet. Is such a thing available for the Ipad if I receive an attachment on my travels or will I have to take the netbook? I had a look on the App store and the office type applications had mixed reviews.
Open Office on the netbook is great, but seems a shame to take both devices?
This is the main thing I can't do on my Android phone when away as my documents to go viewer won't open .csv, only .xls, and the screen is a bit small to scroll around a spreadsheet with 11 columns of figures.

The Numbers app is almost free and works beautifully straight from email.
antc, I just read that the iPhone will play mp3 in email, no doubt the iPad does the same.

Thanks. This will at least stop my wife watching cat videos on it
I thought that was just stereotype, but whilst I was slaving away in the kitchen getting the full size sim cut and filed I just heard cat videos
I'm partial to a ***** too though

Wonder if it actually works? I noticed in a lot of the apps the reviews said it just didn't work. This is the same as you see in the Android marketplace, or doesn't work on my "xyz" model HTC that is just out this week. I expected more from the Apple Appstore that is supposed to have had everything vetted and double checked by feeding it to albino virgins for 10 years before it can be released?

Personally I like using my iPad. I've had it 3 weeks and I've only used my laptop twice in that time, the rest of the time I've used the iPad for surfing the internet and email, plus a few game apps, oh and Shazam
I don't have an iPhone or similar so for me this is a handy fill-in between my standard phone and my laptop. The instant-on function is fantastic when I want to quickly check something online or check/send an email. If I had an iPhone (or similar) I don't think I would have bothered with the iPad. Before the iPad was released I was contemplating getting an iPod Touch, if they did one with 3G then I would have bought one, but they didn't.
Agreed it's pretty expensive but then most Apple stuff is compared to alternatives. There are plenty of cheap MP3 players out there but most people I know have got iPods for example. (Sometimes I wonder if this is a reason some people don't like Apple products, is it because they can't afford them and it's a bit of green-eyed-envy? Maybe not, just something I've thought about ) At the moment there isn't really anything in the same form to compete with the iPad.
I think MacBooks are expensive that's why I didn't buy one at the time I bought my laptop.
Other than an iPod (that I won!) I don't own any other Apple products so I would hardly be classed as a fan boy!
