Default Alternitave phone line rental to bt?

Does anyone have their line rental from anyone else apart from BT? I have had it with bt and their abysmal customer service. The only alternatives I have found so far are talk talk (heard some bad things about them) and the post office.
Are they any other companies out there that offer line rental? I only use the line for broadband anyway so I am not too fussed on call charges.

Edit I spelt Alternative wrong in the thread title

SKY for me Superb all round in my experience , already had the TV package so just signed up for HD and I get all my phone and broadband free of charge. You can`t get cheaper than that . My broadband speed also doubled overnight after I switched to Sky proving conclusively that Tiscali do throttle bandwidth . I saved £495 in the first twelve months. Really pleased all round. Two of my mates have just built new houses and have gone through the process of getting new lines installed to their properties , BT wanted £125 minimum just to install the lines , Sky did it free of charge when they took out the HD package.

Post office definitely offer line rental by the looks of it

And seeing down here in Cornwall electricity has just caught on, fibre optic will not be with us until around 2100. So that is out.

There doesn`t appear to be any offers on at the moment , so it may be worthwhile keeping an eye out until there is . Details here :

Virgin do line rental as well. Only been with them a couple of months so havent had the opportunity to really tell what customer service is like, but seem ok so far.

I'm with Southern Electric for my landline (which is probably a BT line in all fairness though).

About £12 a month and never had an issue. Quarterly bills.

Will be swapping to Virgin Media soon as I want to get their TV, Internet and Phone bundle to save $$.

I'll be honest and say I don't know

From what I remember I was paying about £50 every three months to BT for a standard evening & weekends call deal. I pay approx. £36 every three months now to Southern Electric and get the same deal for evenings & weekends

I do have my gas/electric through them though, not sure if it makes a difference

Sky technically is very good although I have found their customer service to be appalling. TalkTalk prior to that, even worse than Sky TBH - wouldn't touch them with yours.

With Sky make sure you get everything in writing, and then hold their feet to the fire to make sure you get it. I'm better off to the tune of about £80-90, but I have made 2 complaints, one of which was escalated to Ofcom, and I've been a customer of Sky's for nearly 6-weeks now

I pay the same to Virgin as I would to BT. I dont think Virgin make any money on it they just pay it on to BT. Interestingly the whole set up was less than BT even though they used a BT technician.

Seemingly so as we're with them . I thought we were just paying them the line rental, but they switched us over to their line apparently. Had no real issues so far (more bothered about internet than phone as we rarely use the phone). BB has been miles better than previously, which was AOL, and we had been with TalkTalk for the phone. Both of their customer services were appauling, and we had huge problems with BB. Their line rental (sky) is slightly cheaper than BT, but you're best keeping an eye out for any deals going, we got 6 months free BB and 3 months free line rental.

I use the AOL service including line rental. The day I changed my dsl download speed went from less than 1 Mb up to 3-5 Mb. Previously I was told my line would only be good for up to 2Mb.

I know why Leslie, because since you are the ONLY person left with AOL, you have the whole pipe to yourself. You lucky lucky man

You could well be right Swiss. The AOL software is very user friendly and it always works well enough. Never had much to complain about except for slow BB speed before I joined their phone jobber.

Musn't shout about it or everyone will want to join!

not too sure with the phone side of things but for the net I would never use anything other than Virgin as the technology is far superior, speed isn't dependable on the distance from the exchange and Virgin are already trialling 100Mbit and 150Mbit broadband - Sky etc will always be governed by BT and crappy copper wire until they upgrade fully to the 21CN

Thats interesting. Why were they saying that distance from the exchange was significant then. Was it just an excuse?

It is surprising how quickly people catch up with a good thing though!

What a worry.

You might find your virgin fibre is also delivered on "crappy" copper from the street distribution box
